Richland, Texas; material on TERRELL, GRAYBEAL, and CHAPMAN surnames; ancestor charts of
Ruby LYON which include DOWNE, LIVINGSTON, SEYMOUR, HEATH and EASTERLY surnames;
ancestor charts of Roy Tom HOPKINS, Jr., which include MILLER, MCELROY, PORTER, JACKSON,
MAYFIELD, LANDt, STREETER, MCCULLY, EVANS, and JOHNSON surnames; the SIEVERSCHAIBLE
family; the descendants of Heinrich FLENTGE and Mina HARTGEMIER/HAGEMEIER;
and of Thomas Bird DALTON; the New York connection of the bE LA MONTAGNES, EARLES,

The society meets at 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesdays of each month, except in August and
December, at the Highland Park Baptist Church at 5206 Balcones Drive. Membership is by the
calendar year. Full year dues are $20.00 for individuals and $30.00 for families.

Hopkins County Heritage. Published by the Hopkins County Genealogical Society, 212 Main Street,
PO Box 624, Sulphur Springs, TX 75483-0624 Vol. 15, No. 1 - 4 (March, June, September,
December 1998). Paper Cover. Stapled. Approximately 33 pages per issue including a fourpage
index, volume pages consecutively numbered.
The Hopkins County society is one of the most active in the state. This well-designed
publication won second place in the 1999 TSGS Writing Awards competition for quarterlies
published by a partner society.
Hopkins County was created from parts of Lamar and Nacogdoches counties in March 1846 and
the county seat was established at Tarrant, where it remained until 1870 when Sulphur Springs was
designated as the new county seat. The original county has been reduced in size several times. The
present courthouse was constructed in 1895.
Regular features of this publication includes Welcome to new Members, Meet Your Officers,
Library Review, a large Queries section (free to members, $2.00 for non-members), Internet or Email
News, information on the Hopkins County First Families/Pioneer certificate program, and a
Calendar of Events.
The March issue contains biographical information on John MASON, an early resident; a photo of
students at East End School in 1906; a list of persons associated with the Rehoboth Baptist Church,
1870-1898; a profile of the Sulphur Springs Farmers Alliance; and a list of major epidemics in
America.
The June issue has biographical information on Winfield Scott MITCHELL (1847-1937);
gleanings from the Hopkins County Echo of 1938; a list of county officers, 1869 and 1846-1920;
names in county property assessments of 1890; the Sulphur Springs High School class of 1920;
student essays titled "My Favorite Ancestor" (for David Stanley PETTY and John Malcolm29
