Seven children were born to John Woodson Gilliam and his wife, the former Susan
Madison Venable.
I. Charles Woodson Gilliam, b. Sept. 9, 1829, in Prince Edward Co., Va. He moved
as a teenager from Prince Edward County to Chariton Co., Mo. On Oct.On Oct. 4, 1854, he married
Betsy Goodridge Watts, daughter of the Rev. William B. Watts, a Methodist minister of the
Missouri Conference and Elizabeth Burton Watts. Betty Watts was born Feb. 27, 1835, in
Randolph, Mo. The Watts family was newly arrived in Missouri also, having come from the
Culpepper - Madison Counties area of Virginia. They had eight children, but only four of them
lived to maturity. Those four included:
A. William John Gilliam, b. Nov. 24, 1855, Chariton Co., Mo., d. April 1, 1855 at
Fayette Co., Tex. No issue.
B. Lizzie (probably Elizabeth) Madison. b. Nov. 25, 1856, Chariton Co., Mo. Died
Jan. 16, 1911 at Realto Monte, Mex. Married June 12, 1874 to Dr. George W. Christian in Fayette Co.,
Tex. They had four children:
1. Ora Christian, b. 1877, d. Feb. 19, 1911. Married (1) Dr. Murphy; (2) Carlos
Curtis. Children unknown.
2. William Gilliam Christian, b. Jan. 1, 1879 at Weimer, Tex., d. July 27, 1954.
Married Melete Courmier. They had two children and adopted a third.
a. Gladys Christian, b. May 10, 1908. Married Verne Crane.
b. Bess Christian. b. Dec. 7, 1910 at Humble, Tex.
c. John Thompson (adopted).
3. Bessie Christian, b. Aug. 21, 1883, at San Antonio, Tex., d. Nov. 11, 1966, Santa
Fe, N. Mex. Married Sept. 22, 1905 to Louis Edward Polhemus. They had one child.
a. Elizabeth Polhemus, m. Alvon Telford, d. July 30, 1964.
4. Frances Love Christian, b. Aug. 20, 1888, Burnet Co., Tex., d. June 28, 1967, at
Los Angeles, Ca. Married Sept. 2, 1909 at Eagle Pass, Tex. to Peter Jacob Vogel. Their children:
a. Frances Louise Christian Vogel, b. May 8, 1910, Necaxa, Mex. Married (1) June
6, 1937, to Alva Charles Hall; (2) Glen Burdette Fuller.
b. Anna Bess Vogel. b. March 5, 1912, Mission, B.C., Canada. Married (1) Samuel
Austin Michael; (2) Turley Talbert.
C. Sally Patton Gilliam, b. Oct. 25, 1858, in Chariton Co., Mo., d. Feb. 7, 1864 in
Fayette Co., Tex. No issue.
D. Edward Everette Gilliam, b. April 27, 1860, Chariton Co., Mo., d. Dec. 27, 1860
in Fayette Co., Tex. No Issue.
E. Charles Abner Gilliam, b. July 7, 1864, in Fayette Co., Tex. Died Sept. 27, 1866
in Fayette Co., Tex. No issue.
F. Frances Luvinia Gilliam, b. Oct. 7, 1862, Chariton Co., Mo., d. Jan. 5, 1907, in
Delores Hidalgo, Mex. Married in December 1882 (1) Dr. J.W. Love; (2) J.W. Page. She had one child
by Dr. Love:
1. Panchita (Frances) Love, b. Dec. 12, 1883, Monterey, Mex., d. May 22, 1863,
Whittier, Calif. Married (1) James Flanagan; (2) Arthur Elliott. One son by James Flanagan:
a. Jack Flanagan, b. June 2, 1903, d. Feb. 2, 1933, Glendale, Ca. Married Jean
Cashion ca. 1924.
G. Thaddeus Venable Gilliam, a twin, b. Dec. 29, 1872, Fayette Co., Tex. As
youngster he lived briefly in Lavaca Co., Tex. He moved with his family to Medina Co., Tex. in the late
1870's. He died at Hondo, Tex, May 28, 1936. Married April 21, 1897, Adriana "Addie" Pennington.
They had four children.
1. William Jennings Gilliam, b. Feb. 1, 1898, d. ca. 1972. Married Effie Smith. They
lived in Mission Tex. They had five children.
a. Billy 0. Gilliam, b. Oct. 1, 1925. Married Dorothy Kitchens. They had five
children.
b. Monte Charles Gilliam, b. at Hondo, Tex., Feb. 25, 1931. Married Marivonne
Windham.
c. Frank Thad Gilliam, b. Aug. 13, 1933. Married Joyce Raye.
d. Jesse Michael Gilliam, b. Mar. 25, 1936, at Mission, Tex. Married Gwen
