ACU Rodeo participants showed off their steer branding
ability along with several other talents at the university's annual
All-School Rodeo hosted by the Agricultural and Environmental
Sciences Club.
Free admission was accepted into the Rodeo when purchasing
a $20 Benefit Concert ticket for a 7:30 p.m. performance
featuring singers Kina Lankford and Billy Joe Shaver.
All proceeds went to the family of two-year-old, Canon Plerkins,
a liver transplant recipient.
Mark Sigler, Rodeo Club president and agricultural business
graduate student from Gainesville, said attending the rodeo
was a good opportunity for students. _
"Ihis helps us get back in touch with the old days and
how things were when there was only cattle driving to do;' Si- p
gler said."'Ile money also helps pay for Canon Perkins' hospital
bills."
Before the rodeo, teams signed tiup to compete in the activities.
Some of the men's events were team branding, wild
cow milking and double mugging. The women participated
in a wild stick horse race, goat milking, goat dressing and the
calf scramble.
"I've been to the rodeo every year since 2002, when I was
bucked off of a bronco," Sigler said.
He said he has helped with the rodeo every year since
then. _
"My favorite part was bringing a little joy into people's
lives, watching them have fun and just the fact that I lived
through the whole experience:' he said.
Ihe Rodeo has taken place for close to 50 years, said
Lyndi Stuart, Rodeo committee member and junior outdoor
education major from Roby.
"One of the newer contests was the surprise queen event
offered to the Rodeo women;'," Stuart said. "Even if I wasn't
helping out, I would still attend the Rodeo."
