International division eases anxiety
oving away from family members and living on
a college campus for the first time have long
brought welcomed transitions mixed with anxiety.
Some students added another element of uncertainty
- adjusting to a new country. Together, the Division
of International Studies and the International Students'
Association developed efforts to keep international students
from facing their adjustment alone.
"The International Division is here to help ease students
into the different culture," said Ted Presley Jr.,
academic adviser for the Division of International
Studies.
"We maintain an 'open door' policy in order to
encourage students to come by if they are feeling overwhelmed
or just need to talk," Presley said.
In addition to the International Division, foreign students
could also turn to the International Students'
Association. The ISA developed activities and created
an atmosphere to help students become more familiar
with ACU and American lifestyles and to share cultural
differences with each other and Americans.
"We want to provide a home and a family type of
environment so the students will feel and know they
have someone to turn to," said Amy Teo, sophomore
marketing major from Singapore and president of ISA.
"We would like to help all students gain a global perspective;
therefore, we don't just learn American cultures
from American students but we also teach our cultures."Cultural teaching was not limited to current students.
This year, the division organized a new avenue to
emphasize cultural enrichment at ACU. Presley extended
invitations to all ACU international alumni for the AT intti
1996 Homecoming festivities - another ACU-style, Presley w
open-armed welcome..
