The First T. I. A. A. Eleven
The above aggregation of gridsters was the first T. I. A. A. football team that Abilene Christian
College ever placed on the field. Football has been a major sport of the institution since
the Fall of 1919, but it was only this season that the Wildcat pigskin artists were admitted to
the Texas Association after a very successful season last year against some of the best junior
college teams of the state.
The first year in higher company was perhaps not as desirable as it might have been but
it was a start toward a higher plane of athletics for the purple and white warriors.
The first year in the Association was hardly as unpretentious as the start which the sport
received in its first season here when the games lost over balanced by far the total won. In
the second season however the school gathered a team that was perhaps the best in this part of
the state. It went through one season undefeated after meeting the best that West Texas had
to offer. A change in the coaching staff and the loss of a number of the best men resulted
in a very unsuccessful season for the year 1921.
Athletics received their first real start with the coming of Vic Payne as Head Coach in 1922.
In the two years of his stay he did much to bring the athletic standard to where it now is. His
teams lost three games in two years. With his efforts to build on, the future of A. C. C. athletics
holds great opportunities.-90
