r. ich. Gregory, a 1978 graduate of HPU, was cited as
"sudernt'teacher of the year," named to "Who's Who in American
Colleges and Universities," recognized on the Dean's List for three
years and named to the Academic All-Lone Star Conference
basketball team for two years during his time as an HPU student.
His first appearance in a college game occurred as a freshman
when playing Wayland Baptist in Brownwood. Time was running
out and HPU's starting point guard fouled out. As Dr. Gregory was
checking in, the coach told him that if he shot the ball, he was
coming out of the game. With eight seconds left, Dr. Gregory stole
a mid-court pass and attempted to call a time-out. However, HPU
did not have any time-outs remaining. "As I walked over to the
coach, he asked if I was listening in the huddle when he told us we
didn't have any left. I guess I wasn't," remembered Dr. Gregory. He
did recover from that incident and went on to lead HPU to a 22-5
record and a #11 national ranking his junior year. His basketball
career ended with an impressive 107-44 record, including appearances
in four consecutive LSC tournament championship games.
Family is also an important part of Dr. Gregory's life. He is
married to the former Judy Barnes, who also attended HPU. They
have three children: Josh, 17, attends Brownwood High and is a
member of the basketball and baseball teams; Tiffany, 14, also
attends Brownwood High and is a member of the softball and
debate teams; Zach, 5, attends pre-school and keeps his mother
hopping. With three active children, the Gregorys have their hands
full. Dr. and Mrs. Gregory are supportive parents, attending their
children's functions as much as possible.
Dr. Gregory brings with him the hope and desire to keep the
traditions of HPU alive and growing. "Our graduates will be better
prepared to be leaders in this world. Our strategy to build leaders
has and will continue to focus on academic excellence, servant
leadership and Christian commitment."
