"True education includes gymnastics for the body and music for the soul,
and music must begin and continue along with the other branches." Socrates.
The College of Fine Arts at Howard Payne is stronger than ever. Despite
an entire change of faculty the registration is large, larger in certain departments
than it was last year. Under the direction of Professor Meyer, faculty programs
and monthly student programs have been planned and presented. The work
of the theoretical department has been maintained and extended. A complete
musical course, such as the best colleges and conservatories afford, is now offered
at Howard Payne.
Voice culture, musical history, and the girls' glee club have been fortunately
placed in the hands of Professor Bronson. Singing has become a vital factor
in our college life.
The song of the violin is heard in our college, thanks to the enthusiastic and
masterly teaching of Mrs. Jackson. Our violin department has not been so greatly
advanced in a number of seasons as it has this year.
Miss Wells has taught a large class in Expression and her pupils have contributed
very largely to the success of Fine Arts recitals. An expression of appreciation
is due the department of painting and design, directed by Mrs. Tolman,
without which this book would have been impossible.
"By music, minds an equal temper know,
Nor swell too high, nor sink too low,
If in the breast tumultuous joys arise,
Music her soft persuasive voice applies,
Or when the soul is pressed with cares,
Exalts her in enlivening airs."-POPE.50
