painful media ridicule. Several female Rangers served through
the late 1990s, but at this writing only one remains, and she is
nearing retirement. This issue must be considered as unresolved.
In 1935 University of Texas history professor Walter Prescott
Webb published a history of the Texas Rangers. He closed his
book by sadly predicting the demise of the Rangers in the new
Department of Public Safety. As the years passed, Homer Garrison
often chided the professor for his erroneous forecast. At last,
Webb came to Garrison and admitted that he had been wrong
and planned a revision of his book-a goal cut short by his death
in an auto accident in 1963.
When Webb owned up to his mistake, Garrison declared, "Just
remember, as long as there is a Texas, there will be Texas Rangers."
He was almost certainly right.
Robert Utley has written 16 books, including two about
the Texas Rangers: Lone Star Lawmen: The Second Century
of the Texas Rangers (Oxford, 2007) and Lone
Star Justice: The First Century of the Texas Rangers
(Oxford, 2002; Berkley, 2003).
