Weathering Disaster
Hurricane Rita and Three Historic House Museums BY MELISSA J. HUBERHurricane Rita, the second record-setting
storm to hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, brought
misery and devastation to many towns that lay
in its path. Property damage, displacement,
and life safety issues stood at the forefront following
the disaster. However, as towns and residents
pick up the pieces and move forward, weare reminded that precious cultural resources
were also in peril. Numerous communities in
that area of Texas are stewards of historic
buildings and collections. The institutions that
protect these assets were forced to act quickly
to prepare for the worst and then, with equal
swiftness, to recover from the reality.HERITAGE WINTER 2006
