Finding a copy of HERITAGE magazine
(Winter 2004) on my desk was
the highlight of a long day...
The magazine is outstanding, and its
presentation of the history of Texas land
and the Texas General Land Office
makes me proud to be a small part of this
agency's story. I believe this magazine
shows the dedication of the THF and the
GLO to Texas history, and I hope it will
help raise awareness of the unique role
both our organizations play in preserving
that history...

Texas HERITAGE, Spring 2004,
contained an error on page 28 in
the article, "Fort Worth, State Gets aWorld-Class Civil War Museum." A sentence
in the sixth paragraph reads:
"Among those showcase items are the uniform
coats of Confederate Brigadier
General Joe Shelby, Commander of the
Missouri Cavalry Division...."
First, Joseph O. Shelby used the shortened
name "Jo," not Joe. Any record or
signature I have seen for the general was:
Joseph O., J.O., or Jo; never Joe.
The sentence, as written, indicates that
Missouri had only one cavalry division
and General Shelby was the commander.
In fact, Missouri furnished several cavalry
divisions both in the east and in the
Trans-Mississippi Department. Shelby, as a
colonel, then a brigadier general, commanded
a brigade and, in certain operations,
a division, usually under the command
of General John S. Marmaduke.During the last months of the war, after
Major General Sterling Prices' 1864 invasion
of Missouri, Shelby should have been
assigned as Chief of Calvary for the
Department of Arkansas, which included,
at the time, Missouri. But politics bumped
Shelby back and an infantry officer,
Brigadier General John B. Clark Jr., was
assigned into that position. John B. Clark
Sr. was the Missouri member of the
Confederate Legislature. During Price's
invasion, Major General Marmaduke was
captured.
At any rate; General Shelby commanded
a Missouri cavalry, not the Missouri cavalry
division.
These are just minor errors, of course,
but they do stand out in an historical publication.Jerry Ponder, Mason
