&The Art of CollectingWhenJ.P. Bryan informed his wife
May Jon that he was going to be
honored for his collection of Texas
and Southwestern memorabilia, shereplied,
"You mean you re receiving
an award for shopping?"
And what a shopping spree it has been! During the
past 36 years, Bryan has amassed more than 10,000
historically significant artifacts that convey the story
of Texas and the western North American continent.
While it began with books, Bryan's collection has
become an amalgam of print, maps, art, utilitarian
goods, and even a historic structure-the magnificent
Gage Hotel in Marathon, Texas. Indeed, the pursuit
of this passion has required family sacrifices, and this
highlights the truism of collecting. That is: you must
have a tolerant family, though not necessarily an
understanding one, because collecting is an individual
obsession.
Most certainly, one must be financially able to play
the game. As the founder and senior managing partner
of Houston's Torch Energy Advisors, Inc., Bryan
