THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
By John B. MeadowsWay too often, the accomplishments of
those involved in preservation do not get
the public recognition they deserve. It is
not public praise these folks seek. They
pursue their goals with the objective of
saving something special for other generations.
Texas is a much better place for
their efforts.
This issue of HERITAGE focuses on
three individuals and one organization and
their efforts at preserving a piece of Texas
history.
Each of our articles deals with one of the
recipients of this year's Preservation Awards
from the Texas Historical Foundation. We
are also quite proud of the fact that two of
the honorees - F. Lee Lawrence and J.P.
Bryan -are former presidents of the 4
Foundation.
Our first article, "Hotel Restoration
Revitalizes Texas Town," explores the vision of J.P. Bryan and its
effect on the tiny town of Marathon. During travels to the Big Bend
or the Davis Mountains, some of you have probably already
experienced the charms of the restored Gage Hotel. The time and
resources expended by J.P. and Mary Jon Bryan will benefit
Marathon and the Big Bend area for generations and offers to those
of us who frequent the Trans Pecos, a resting stop and watering
hole, bar none. Bryan, of Houston, was the Foundation's 1994
recipient of the Judge James E. Wheat Award for the Gage Hotel
renovation.
The focus of the article "The Ancient Art of Adobe", Norman
J. Dehmlow, the Foundation's John Ben Shepperd Jr. Award
winner for exemplary craftsmanship, was instrumental in the
restoration work on the Gage Hotel and several other West Texas
buildings. Without a doubt, Dehmlow, a skilled and dedicated
craftsman, has made a lasting mark on Trans Pecos architecture.Texas has to offer, it is F. Lee Lawrence of
Tyler. Lee has devoted his adult life to
preservation, the study of Texas history,
and the organizations that promote the
same. His contributions include serving on
the Texas State Historical Survey Committee
and completing terms as president
of the Texas Historical Association, and as
mentioned above, our Texas Historical
Foundation.
Lee's longtime friend Shirley Caldwell
contributes this profile of Lee. From experience
I assure you that there is no better
way to spend time than sitting under an
oak tree listening to Lee's tales of Texas
lore. The Foundation is most honored to
have Lee receive our 1994 Mary Moody
Northen Award for his outstanding contributions
to and on behalf of non-profit
historical preservation groups in Texas.
Another article, "65 Years of Publishing Excellence" honors the
Foundation's 1994 Deolece Parmelee Award winner, the Texas
Archaeological Society for publishing its Bulletin during the last six
decades.
Those of us who are members of the Texas Archaeological
Society have always recognized that the Bulletin is well worth the
price of membership. Tim Perttula, editor of the publication,
contributes this article, which chronicles the Texas Archaeological
Society Bulletin for its excellence in recording archaeological technique,
method, and history.
In closing, I would like to once again thank all of those who have
given generously to the Foundation in the past, and I challenge
each one of us to do more. Historic preservation does not come
without sacrifice. For us to move forward we must continue to do
what we can to interest others in joining the Foundation and to
give of our resources to the greatest extent possible. Thanks to all.If there is one individual in Texas who exemplifies the best God Bless Texas.
