Tour Dates Announced
The 1887 Reymershoffer Home, one of
Galveston Island's most outstanding examples
of Victorian Eclectic architecture,
is one of ten private, restored residences
that will be open to the public during the
1992 Galveston Historic Homes Tour, May
2, 3, 9, and 10. In addition to guided tours
of fine historic homes, visitors will enjoy
special events, exhibits, and lectures.
Advance tickets are $13 if purchased by
May 1; tickets are $15 the day of the tour.

Historic Big Bend Photographs
The work of W.D. Smithers, the first
photographer who first chronicled the Big
Bend region will be on display in the Fort
Davis Historical Site Visitors Center until
January 31. The exhibit summarizing the
life and work of Smithers can be viewed
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Original photographs, glass-plate positive
"magic lantern" slides, and Smither's
own unique concept of "cowboy lamp
shades" are included in the exhibit.
According to records, Smithers was born
in Mexico in 1895 and was the first and
foremost photo journalist to document the
Big Bend area. Smithers served in the U.S.
Army from 1917 to 1919. By the 1920s,
Smithers began extensive travel through
on Display in Fort Davis
the Southwest, often photographing from
an airplane. In 1932, Smithers moved to
Fort Davis to photograph the progress of
the Scenic Loop, the construction of both
the McDonald Observatory and Indian
Lodge, and chronicle the development of
ranching in the Davis Mountains.
In 1969, the University of Texas at
Austin bought more than 8,000 images of
the Smithers' collection. The Harry Ransom
Library of the Humanities Research
Center in Austin is now the main repository
of Smithers' work.
