Art Show to Focus on Early German Settlers in Texas
More than 40 original art works by
Texas artist Christine Moor Sanders will
be featured in an exhibition at the Christ
Church Cathedral, Cloister Gallery, 1117
Texas Avenue in Houston from April 130.
A preview reception is scheduled for
6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Cloister Gallery
on Saturday, April 11. Poetry written
especially for this exhibition by Lorraine
C. Yearwood will be presented at the reception;
German singers will also perform,
and there will be music recorded on
the 100-year-old pipe organ of the
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Round
Top.
Sanders' art focuses on the early German
settlers of the Round Top area. These
German settlers were generally well-educated
and have sometimes been called
"Latins" because of their classical educations.
Through their devotion to hard
work and their tenacious character, they
were able to carve a new society that notonly survived but flourished and enabled
them to become a major influence in early
Texas. As they dealt with the Indians,
built their homes, put in their crops, and
endured physical and mental hardships,
they created the cultural groups that sustained
them through the ordeal: singing
societies, agricultural societies, shooting
clubs, literary organizations, clubs to preserve
German traits of character, newspapers,
churches, elementary schools, a
university, and political groups. Through
their careful attention to all of their human
needs, they were able to establish a vital
society in a short period of time. It is this
deliberate creation of a thriving society
and conscious preservation of German
culture that is the focus of this art exhibition. The artist, Christine Moor Sanders, is
a fifth-generation Texan on both sides of
her family, and stories handed down in the
families over the generations have stimulated her interest in history and given her
a sensitive understanding of the early Texas
settlers.
Recently, Sanders' interest in art and
history have been converging, and her
primary focus now is on making history
come alive for the viewer through art
forms.
Sanders most recent one-person show
included pen and ink, collage, watercolor,
oil, terra cotta sculpture, and metal sculpture. The Round Top exhibition will include
sculptures, water colors, pen and ink drawings,
and pastels.
Members of the Texas Historical Foundation
will attend the April 11 reception,
co-sponsoring this event in honor of Texas
History Month.
