For the purpose of preserving the
highway, President Bush signed the Route
66 Study Act of 1989 last October. The
bill, introduced to Congress by Senator
Pete Dominici of New Mexico, authorizes
the completion of a comprehensive study
of the highway. Conducted by the
National Park Service under the direction
of the Secretary of the Interior, the study
will determine how best to commemorate
this historic highway.
Route 66 books, articles, films and state
organizations have grown in recent years as
love for the old highway and personal
memories carry people back to a different
time and place, and inspire us to preserve
what remains. Some of the books published
in the last few years are as follows:

Jamie Wise is a member of the firm of Ausland
Architects who, together with the City of Amarillo,
Preservation Amarillo, and the Sixth Street
Merchant's Association-renamed the Amarillo
Chapter of the Old Route 66 Association of
Texas-completed the Sixth Street Revitalization
Study for Amarillo, Texas in 1989.
