Resolution Trust Corporation
Donates Historic Houses to the
Galveston Historical Foundation
For the first time in the country, the Resolution Trust
Corporation has donated property to a non-profit organization.
Galveston Historical Foundation accepted ownership
of four historic homes, collectively known as Rainbow Row,
from the federal agency overseeing the affairs of failed savings
and loan institutions.
Listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part
of Galveston's Central Business District/Downtown Multiple
Resource Group, Rainbow Row is considered the most
significant surviving grouping of Galveston vernacular
architecture.
The four, two-story frame houses were built in 1904 by
Robert Palliser, a prominent local contractor whose works
included Galveston's Grand Hotel and Opera House, First
National Bank Building, and City Hall. Rainbow Row got its
name after a previous owner painted the two pairs of twin
houses in a variety of colors.
By transferring ownership to the Galveston Historical
Foundation, Resolution Trust Corporation officials estimate
they have saved the nation's taxpayers the $40,000 cost of
demolition while providing for the property's eventual return
to the tax rolls.
The Foundation plans to rehabilitate the houses as part
of a demonstration project providing home ownership opportunities
for low to moderate income families.

BOARD MEMBERS
There are currently a few openings on the Board of Directors of the
Texas Historical Foundation. The Board is seeking to recruit new
members who will reflect the full range of historical, preservation and
archaeological interests that the Foundation has traditionally
supported. It is also important that the Board represent the different
geographical areas of the state. At present we are seeking to increase
representation from West Texas and encourage applications from that
area. Please send cover letter and curriculum vita to:
