Texas Seaport Museum
Opens In Galveston
The new Texas Seaport Museum on
Galveston Island holds its official grand
opening Saturday, October 26, 1991. A
project of Galveston Historical Foundation,
the $2.5 million facility interprets the
maritime heritage of the Gulf Coast.
Museum visitors may explore the decks
of the 1877 iron barque ELISSA, Texas' Tall
Ship, or thrill to the romance of the state's
seafaring past, dramatically presented
through a widescreen, multi-media presentation
in the Museum's theater.
An interactive computer database allows
guests to look up ancestors from the records
of thousands of immigrants who entered
the United States through Galveston, "The
Ellis Island of the West."
Fascinating walk-through exhibits examine
the workings of the 19th-century
port, while the tugs, shrimp boats and
freighters in the modern harbor pass the
Museum's observation decks.
The Texas Seaport Museum is located
at Pier 21 near The Strand on Galveston
Island. It is open daily, except Thanksgiving
and Christmas, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
