Austin Children's Museum, West Towne
Common, 1501 W. 5th (472-2499). After three
years of circulating exhibits, programs and special
events, the museum without walls now has
a permanent home for traveling and interactive
exhibits, plus spaces for educational and social
activities. Open Tuesday -Friday, 10-5, Saturday
and Sunday Noon-5. Call for prices.
Elisabet Ney Museum, 304 E. 44th (4582255).
Former studio of sculptor Elisabet Ney.
Adult art classes and educational programs offered.
Open Tuesday-Friday 11-4:30, Saturday
and Sunday 2-4:30. Free.
French Legation, 802 San Marcos (472-8180).
Bayou-style residence built in 1841 of handsawn
lumber from Bastrop, with doors, windows
and hardware from France. The former home of
the French ambassador to the Republic of Texas
is now a museum furnished with 19th-century
antiques. What may be the only authentic historic
French family kitchen in the U.S. is here.
Open Tuesday-Sunday 1-5. General admission

George Washington Carver Museum, 1165
Angelina (472-4809). Open Tuesday and
Wednesday 10-6, Thursday, Noon-8, Friday
and Saturday Noon-5.
Lyndon B. Johnson Library and Museum,
2313 Red River (482-5136). Repository of
Johnson's papers and documents (not open to
the public), with a few exhibits and political
memorabilia from the Johnson era, including a
replica of the Oval Office. Tours for groups of 12
or more by appointment. Open 7 days 9-5. Free
Texas Memorial Museum, 24 & Trinity (4711604).
Four floors devoted to exhibits on anthropology,
botany, zoology, geology, paleontology,
and Texas history. In the Paleontology
Hall: eight-foot-long dimetrodon, an early
mammal-like, fin-backed reptile. Gift shop.
Open Monday-Friday 9-5, Saturday and Sunday
1-5. Free.Call ahead.
ART
Huntington Art Gallery, UT Art Building,
23rd and San Jacinto (471-7324). Harry Ransom
Center, 21st and Guadalupe. Both open
Monday-Saturday 9-5, Sunday 1-5. Free. Call
ahead.
Laguna Gloria Art Museum, 3809 W. 35th
(458-8191). Located in an Italianate villa on 29
acres on the shore of Lake Austin. Group tours
by reservation. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10-5,
Thursday 10-9, Sunday 1-5. Free.

OUTDOORS
Westcave Preserve, go one mile past Bee Caves
on Texas Hwy. 71, turn left on Hamilton Pool
Road, proceed 17 miles, and take first gate on
the right after crossing the Pedernales River (1825-3442).
This natural treasure includes a
limestone-walled canyon and many endangered
plant species. Open Saturday and Sunday
10-4 with guided tours every two hours. Free;
donations accepted.
Wild Basin, 1.25 miles north of Bee Caves Road
on Loop 360 (476-4113). 220-acre santuary and
wilderness preserve for native plants and animals
and environmental education. Programs
for elementary schools and weekend tours for
the general public. Recently completed is a onethird-mile
nature trail for the physically impaired.
Open 7 days dawn to 9:30. Free.
Zilker Park, 2200 Barton Springs Road (4992000).
Noted for Barton Springs swimming
pool, the miniature train, paddle boat and canoe
rentals, picnic facilities, Austin Area Garden
Center, and grassy slopes and spreading
trees. Open 7 days 6-10. Park admission free.
Parking $2 (some areas) on weekends and holidays
or take free shuttle bus from Stratford Drive
under MoPac bridge.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Texas State Capitol Complex, 11th & Congress
(463-4630). The Capitol houses artifacts
of Texas. Open 6am-1 1pm. Tours 7 days a week
8:15-4:30, every 15 minutes. Across the street at
1006 Congress is the Old Bakery and Emporium
(477-5961), now a craft shop selling crafts by
senior citizens with baked goods and coffee
available. Monday through Friday 9-4, Saturday
10-3. Nearby is the Governor's Mansion,
1010 Colorado (475-2121). The 126-year-old,
20-room building is open for tours MondayFriday
10-noon, every 20 minutes. Reservations
for groups of 15 or more. Free. Call ahead.

CORPUS CHRISTI

MUSEUMS
Corpus Christi Museum, 1900 No. Chaparral
(883-2862). A general museum with exhibits
on man, natural history, and earth and marine
history. Treasure hunt for children each Saturday
at 1:30. Open Tuesday -Saturday 10-5,
Sunday 2-5. Free.
Museum of Oriental Cultures, 426 S. Staples
(883-1303). Permanent exhibits include doll
collection, Chinese porcelain, costumes, and
lacquerware. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10-4.
