THC's annual conference in El Paso.
To supplement this exhibit, GHS organized
a role-playing orientation program
in the public elementary schools. This
program is being adapted into a livinghistory
interpretive program-complete
with traveling trunks-for the upcoming
school year.
Books published by GHS include the
four volumes in the Georgetown Yesteryears
series. An outgrowth of the city's
Sesquicentennial Folklore Committee activities,
this compilation of oral histories
features anecdotes and personal reminiscences
by long-time residents. The society's
forthcoming renovation and design
manual will describe the history, architectural
development, and maintenance of
Georgetown's historic homes and buildings.
A newly published tour booklet,
"Exploring Historic Georgetown," serves
as a handy guide to the downtown and
residential areas.
Another education program offered by
GHS for use by civic groups and schools
is "A Legacy in Wood and Stone: Historic
Buildings of Georgetown." This professionally
prepared audiovisual slide presen
tation introduces visitors and residents
to Georgetown's residential architecture.
A second slide program highlighting the
downtown historic district will be available
this fall.
To stimulate tourism, the society sponsors
the annual Heritage Antique Show
on both branches of the San Gabriel
River during the last weekend in October.
Several historic homes tours have
been held in recent years. Group tours of
historic residences and guided walking
tours of the square can be arranged
throughout the year. The society's Book
Review series attracts area bookworms,
while a spring quilt show draws needlework
enthusiasts from throughout Central
Texas.
Membership in the Georgetown Heritage
Society is open to everyone. Supporters
live in both the newer and the established
neighborhoods and include
both long-time residents and newcomers.
