GENERAL INFORMATION BULLETIN
the University. A "proposal of merger" was presented to Daniel
Baker's Board and was unanimously approved and was later adopted
and approved by the Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees
of the University. The effective date of the merger was September 1,
1946 and titles were passed November 18, 1946.
Daniel Baker was organized in 1889 and has been operated under the
Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., the Synod of the Presbyterian Church,
U. S., of Texas, and most recently as an independent Presbyterian
College. Daniel Baker enters Southwestern University as a senior college
with good equipment and an independent endowment fund.
THE CHARTER
Under the original charter of Southwestern University, which was
approved February 5, 1875, provision was made for two boards of control,
the Board of Curators and the Board of Trustees, each with its
peculiar functions. This plan was found cumbersome in certain instances
and in 1906. by the concurrent vote of the Texas Conferences,
it was decided to change to one board. A revised charter was secured
combining the two boards into one, the Board of Trustees. The title of
Regent was changed to that of President.
This revised charter, which, with the exception of the above change,
was largely a transcript of the original, was approved May 23, 1907.
In 1943 the several patronizing Annual Conferences of the Methodist
Church in Texas and New Mexico were asked to petition the State
of Texas for extension of our charter rights. These resolutions were
unanimously adopted and in consequence thereof a revised charter was
approved by the State of Texas. The approved charter follows:
CHARTER
"Article 1. This association shall be known as Southwestern University,
by which name it shall contract and be contracted with, sue and
be sued, and transact all of its business.
"Art. 2. This association is formed for the purpose of carrying on
and conducting an educational undertaking at the City of Georgetown,
in Williamson County, Texas.
"Art. 3. Said association shall exist for a term of Fifty Years from
February 6, 1925, and during such time shall retain and have the original
privileges and immunities and rights of property which it had
under the original charter, and amendment thereto, above mentioned.
"Art. 4. The business of said association shall be transacted by
trustees, who shall have succession, subject to such regulations as the
several Annual Conferences of The Methodist Church patronizing said
Southwestern University shall determine. Such trustees shall have
authority to enact by-laws, rules and regulations, to have and to hold,
and to enjoy, in trust, for The Methodist Church, all property of whatsoever
kind that shall be granted them by donation, bequest, or otherwise,
for the benefit of said Southwestern University, to convert said13
