REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE SELECTION OF EDUCATION AS A MAJOR
Majors are offered in primary, elementary, and secondary education.
Students who desire to select any division of education as a
major are required to take a preliminary examination in education.
This examination is comprehensive in nature and is both oral and
written, and should be taken during the second semester of the sophomore
year or the first semester of the junior year. Students may be
denied the privilege of choosing education as a major if these requirements
are not met by the beginning of the senior year.
STUDENTS ELECTING ELEMENTARY EDUCATION AS A MAJOR
Students who select elementary education as a major and who do
not intend to begin teaching until after graduation from college
should not take the course in government until the junior year. If
the six year elementary certificate is ordered upon the completion
of the junior year, the last year in college may be counted as one
year of successful teaching. This procedure will make it possible
for the student to secure a permanent elementary certificate after
four years of successful teaching, provided it is ordered during the
life of the six year elementary certificate.
Students who do not follow the procedure outlined above may, in
addition to the work they have taken in elementary education, complete
six semester hours in secondary education and receive a four
year high school certificate. This certificate may be exchanged for a
permanent high school certificate after three years of successful
teaching following graduation from college.
Students who select elementary education as a major may take
nine semester hours in the field of secondary education and receive a
permanent high school certificate upon graduation.
All students selecting education as a major are required to register
for a seminar course in education which meets two hours per
week for one semester. The seminar course does not carry credit
and is open only to seniors.
