Foreword
Tile requirements for the Baclelor of Art.s ldgree in an Amit eIrican
college or university are as varied as tlese institution-e of
higher learning are numerous. Perhaps n1o generally acceptetl
answer will ever be given to tihe question, "Whiat is a liberal edtucation?"
Every liberal art. college attempts to an\-,\e'r tlits (let--
tion in its requirements for its B. A. degree.
Abilene Christian College stands for liberal edllcaltion. It !clieves
that such an education must include a careful and tliorotli't
training of thie head, the hand, and the heart. Its idea of a college
education is in accord with ttat of Dr. William Lyon lPhelps who
said: "Everyone wlo lias a thorough knowledge of the Bible nma
be called educated, and no other learning or culture, 1no matter
how exclusive or elegant, among Europeans or Americans, can
take its place. Western civilization is founded upon the Bibll.
Our ideals, our wisdom, our philosophy, our literature, our art
and ideals come more from tile Bible than from all other book;.
put together ... I thoroughly believe in a university education for
both men and women; but I believe a knowledge of the Bible
without a college education is more valuable than a college course
without the Bible." Tlle principal reason for tlie existence of
Abilene Christian College is to emphasize the teaching of tlhe
Bible. Its bid for patronage and support is based largely on tilt
fact that here students have about them continually a genuine
Christian influence, anti also have a rare opportunity of studying
God's Holy Word. Inl its requirements for the B. A. degree, Abilene
Christian College includes more required courses in tile
Bible text than any other college or university in tile world. Haxing
such high ideals, it hopes to reach many and to train and inspire
them to tile noblest and best living for society, for state, and
for tle cliurch.
With courage, confidence, and hope, therefore, Abilene
Christian College faces the future, believing that tlie God of the
Bible, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, will crown its efforts
with just such success and patronage as it deserves.
