Education 69
includes directed teaching and related activities in public schools. The
total student teaching experience must earn six semester hours of credit.
If certification in ESL, Special Education, all-level Art, PE, or Music is
desired along with secondary student teaching, EDUC 494 will be for
three semester hours of credit. For all-level Art, PE, and Music
certification, EDUC 492 should be taken for three semester hours of
credit. If certification is for secondary education only, EDUC 494 will
be for six hours of credit. Six semester hours are awarded for all-day
student teaching for 12 weeks.
EDUC 495 Student Teaching: Special Education (1-0-3), fall,
spring. Special Education student teaching is all-day for six weeks during
the senior year. The other six weeks of the semester may be used for a
second three semester hour student teaching assignment. Formal
application for student teaching is made with the Director of Field
Experiences. Credit/No-Credit grade.
EDUC 496 Student Teaching: Speech Pathology (1-0-6), fall,
spring. Student teaching in Speech Pathology is an all-day, twelve week
experience in the senior year. Formal application for student teaching is
made with the Director of Field Experiences. Credit/No-Credit grade.
Division of Early Childhood Education
EACH 451 Guidance in Early Childhood (2-2-3), fall, spring.
Fundamental principles underlying behavior and methods of working
with young children. Minimum of 30 hours Child Development Center
participation required. Required for Early Childhood endorsement.
EACH 466 Education of Young Children (3-0-3), fall. A required
course for students who desire the Early Childhood endorsement. A
study of theory and practice in the education of young children. Includes
25 hours of field experience in public schools. Prerequisites: EDUC 311
and 321. (These courses may be taken concurrently with this course.)
EACH 471 Curriculum for Early Childhood Education (3-0-3),
spring. A required course for students who desire the Early Childhood
endorsement. A study of kindergarten curriculum with methods for
implementation. Micro teaching with kindergarten children is induded.
Prerequisites: EDUC 311, 321, and EACH 466.
Division of Reading
READ 263 Methods of Teaching Developmental Reading (3-0-3),
fall, spring. The course deals with the developmental reading process,
K-12. Required of all elementary certification students and all secondary
students who specialize in reading. Experience in the ACU Reading Lab
is required, to be scheduled 3:00-5:00 p.m.
READ 322 Reading in Secondary Content Areas (3-0-3), fall,
spring. A course designed to analyze reading skills involved in secondary
content areas, including techniques of teaching study skills, improving
comprehension, and vocabulary growth. Twenty-five hours of field
experiences are included. This course should be taken concurrently with
EDUC 311 for secondary certification.
READ 362 Reading in Elementary Content Areas (3-0-3), fall,
spring, summer. Designed to emphasize various teaching and learning
skills in content area reading for elementary certification students.
Twenty-five hours of field experiences are included. This course should
be taken concurrently with EDUC 311. For elementary certification.
READ 400 Guided Study (3-0-3).*
READ 450 Development of Reading Materials (3-0-3), fall, spring.
A course emphasizing the development and organization of reading
materials adapted to needs of public school students. An introduction to
media is included. Prerequisite: READ 263.
READ 460 Diagnosis and Remediation in Reading (3-0-3), fall,
spring. A study of diagnostic and remedial techniques in reading.
Required for elementary and secondary certification students with a
reading specialization. Prerequisite: READ 263.
READ 464 The Reading-Writing Connection (3-0-3), fall, spring,
summer. A study of the related language arts taught in the elementary
school.READ 469 Introduction to Linguistics (3-0-3), fall. Introduction to
descriptive and contrastive linguistic concepts with emphasis on
language development, acquisition, and application to language
instruction. Required for secondary students with a reading
specialization and students seeking ESL endorsement.
READ 477 Curriculum for Learning Disabled (3-0-3), fall, summer.
A survey of teaching children and adolescents with learning disabilities.
Required for elementary and secondary students with a reading
specialization. Prerequisites: EDUC 311 and 321.
READ 480 Problems in Reading (3-0-3), fall, spring. A course
designed for elementary and secondary certification students who have a
reading specialization. Individual tutoring of children is required. This
course should be taken near the end of the program. Course fee: $25.
Prerequisites: READ 263, 460, EDUC 311, and 321.
READ 490 Reading for Gifted Students (3-0-3), fall. A course
emphasizing methods and materials for teaching reading to those
identified as gifted and talented. Designed for elementary and secondary
certification students who have a specialization in reading.
Division of Special Education
SPED 473 Psychology of Exceptional Children (3-0-3), fall,
summer. A survey of the nature and needs of exceptional children, such
as the mentally retarded, gifted, and emotionally disturbed.
SPED 474 The Emotionally Disturbed Child (3-0-3), spring,
summer. A study of social and emotional deviance in children including
intervention and prevention strategies.
SPED 476 Psychology of Mental Retardation (3-0-3), spring. The
nature and characteristics of mental retardation and its social, emotional,
and cognitive aspects.
SPED 477 Curriculum for the Learning Disabled (3-0-3), fall,
summer. A survey of teaching children and adolescents with learning
disabilities. Prerequisites: EDUC 311 and 321.
SPED 481 Curriculum: Mentally Retarded(3-0-3), spring. A study
of adapted and modified curriculum for special education students.

Division of Technology
TECH 210 Computers in Education (2-2-3), fall, spring. Required of
certification students. Includes a study of the use of computers in
education with laboratory applications. Course fee: $30.
