12 Admission Requirements
during the first semester at ACU, or in some cases, the
first two semesters. One copy of a list of these conditions
will be given to the student; another will be filed in the
Graduate School Office. One condition which will
appear on every list is that the student must have
written permission from the Dean of the Graduate
School or from the Graduate Council before enrolling
for a second semester of work. Other conditions may
include such things as making at least a specified GPA,
taking and passing specified leveling courses, and
receiving strong recommendations at the end of the
term from teachers and graduate advisers.
An application for admission submitted before completion
of the bachelor's degree should be accompanied by
transcripts including all work thus far completed and
current courses. If other considerations, including the
grade-point average and admissions test scores, are
satisfactory, conditional admission will be granted
subject to the completion of the bachelor's degree.
Non-Degree Admission
Students who want to take graduate courses for
academic credit but are not seeking a degree from
ACU may be admitted on a semester-by-semester basis.
This provision applies, for example, to students enrolled
in another university who wish to transfer the credit, to
students who already have an advanced degree and
simply want to take additional courses, and to ACU
undergraduates who are within nine semester hours of
completing their bachelor's degree and want some extra
work to fill out a semester. A special one-term application
form which omits some of the standard requirements is
available for these students. Students from other
universities are urged to confer with their own advisers
before enrolling at ACU to obtain transfer credit.
Non-degree students who later decide to continue their
work at ACU must apply for admission to a graduate
degree program following the regular procedures. The
fact that they have been admitted to non-degree status
for one or more semesters does not guarantee their
admission to a degree program at ACU, nor is there
any guarantee that courses taken as a non-degree
student will apply to their chosen degree program.
International Admission
International students applying for admission to the
Graduate School must meet the same requirements as
other students plus the requirements explained in the
sections below. They must satisfy all admission
requirements before a Form 1-20 can be issued and
before they leave their home countries. Official academic
transcripts of their college or university courses mustshow evidence of completion of a bachelor's degree
normally granted by accredited U.S. universities.
English Language Requirements
Students whose native language is not English must
submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL) before leaving home. They may be
denied admission if their TOEFL scores do not provide
evidence of their ability to understand and use English
sufficiently well to succeed in their work at ACU. At
present a score of 550, or above, is considered acceptable
for most programs. Students with lower scores may be
offered admission, however, and be required to enroll
in the study of English as a Second Language. They
may also be advised to enroll in non-graduate courses
during their first semester at ACU.
Students with TOEFL scores of 450-550 may apply for
admission to study English as a Second Language.
Satisfactory completion of this program will meet the
language requirement for admission to graduate study.
Personal Letter
International students must include with their application
a letter written in their own hand explaining why they
want to come to ACU. The letter should mention such
things as their intended field of study, the type of degree
they want, and the career for which they are preparing.
Financial Arrangements
A prospective international student must make
necessary financial arrangements to meet the costs of
graduate study in the United States. Abilene Christian
University does not offer any kind of financial assistance
to international students. The minimum cost of
attending Abilene Christian University is approximately
$11,600 for one calendar year (12 months).
After a student has been admitted to a graduate
program, but before issuance of Form 1-20, he or she
must submit a deposit of $500 in U.S. currency and a
statement from a financial sponsor showing what
arrangements have been made to meet the student's
financial obligations. If the student does not subsequently
enroll at ACU, the $500 will be refunded upon request.
If an international student enters the United States on
an 1-20 from ACU, however, and fails to enroll at
ACU, the $500 is forfeited.
Room Reservations
Graduate students are not required to live on campus.
