General Information 5
include free tutoring, numerous audio-visual materials
such as audio cassettes, filmstrips, video cassettes,
modular programs, supplementary books and references,
and instructor-prepared study materials, plus computerassisted
instructional resources and test anxiety
counseling. The center assists students preparing for
pre-professional tests such as GRE, LSAT, MCAT, and
GMAT. ACU students may receive help at the Learning
Enhancement Center on a drop-in basis or by regular
appointments, as well as through referrals by professors.
Career Planning
Although most graduate students have already chosen
their professions, career planning services are available
to all students in the Testing and University Assessment
Center (Administration Building, Room 124). These
services include career interest testing, ability testing,
personality testing, career information, and career
counseling. SIGI-Plus, a computer-assisted career
information system, is also available. There are no
charges for these services. Useful information for all
students includes: sources of information about careers,
occupational trends and opportunities, average salaries,
entrance requirements, job descriptions, opportunities
for advancement, and decision making.
Placement Services
The Career Placement Office (Zellner, Room 221)
assists students and alumni in securing full-time
employment after they have completed their studies at
ACU. At the same time, it helps boards of education,
colleges, and personnel officers of businesses and
governmental agencies to locate qualified employees
from among the students and alumni who have
registered with the Placement Office. There are no
charges for these services.
The Placement Office maintains a file for each
registered applicant including such things as written
recommendations, scholarly achievements, and
information on job preferences, personality, and
previous work experiences. Each year the office receives
many requests to assist employers in filling high-level
positions which require varying amounts of graduate
study. In response, the Director of Placement recommends
candidates from the pool of registered applicants and,
where possible, arranges for interviews between students
or alumni and prospective employers. Students in the
Graduate School are encouraged to register with the
office so that their names will be on file when these
opportunities arise.Health Services
Abilene Christian University maintains a campus
Health Center (McKinzie, East) which deals with both
physical and mental health problems. Two registered
nurses are available to assist students with medical
problems. The nurses make appointments with doctors
in Abilene for students with serious illnesses.
Mental health care provided by the university includes
counseling and psychotherapy for individuals, couples,
families, and groups; psychological testing; consultation
and education; and practicum training for graduatelevel
behavioral science students. The counseling staff
consists of a licensed clinical psychologist and a
marriage and family therapist.
To maintain these services, all full-time students are
charged a health service fee. Questions regarding these
fees should be directed to Dr. Gary McCaleb, Vice
President of Campus Life. A year-round hospitalization
insurance program is available to students through the
Purchasing Office in the Administration Building.
