ELEMENTARY EDUCATION COURSES
300.-School Organization and Management. This course deals
with the organization, control, and management of the elementary
school, with particular attention to the rural school. The
course is divided into these units: The aim of elementary education,
the elementary child, problems of management, and measuring
the results of teaching. Required of all students who expect
to apply for the elementary certificate at the end of the
freshman year.
310.-Psychology of the Elementary Branches. Same as Psvchology
310.
314.-The Elementary School Curriculum. A study of the
subjects taught in the elementary grades with special attention
to objectives and methods. Especially designed for those who
intend to teach after one or two years of college work.
333.-Measurements in Elementary Education. This course
is designed to intrduce the student to the broad field of standardized
testing and classroom testing in the elementary school.
It is primarily to acquaint the student with the technical terms
used in modern educational writing in order that the same might
be read intelligently. Some time will be spent in giving, scoring,
and interpreting the results of standardized achievement
tests that might be used in the grades. Advised prerequisite:
Education 300, 310, and 314 (Freshman Education).
322.-The Teaching of Arithmetic in the Grades. Topics:
Aims of Arithmetic; fundamental operations; common fractions;
decimal fractions; percentage; nature of problems; analysis and
solution of problems; planning lessons; course of study; use of
tests; use of games; work books; practice in teaching.
323.-The Teaching of English in the Grades: Topics: Sentence
structure; paragraphs; oral composition; written composition;
picture study; work books; review of grammar; grammar
applied to composition.
324.-The Teaching of Reading in the Grades: Topics: Phonics;
charts; flash cards; oral work; stories for each grade; method;
literature curriculum; class-room method; illustrative
lessons.
326.-The Teaching of Writing. Applied writing; correlation
of writing with other subjects; study of best methods now
used. Examination for Graves Writing Certificates will be given.
327.-The Teaching of Music in the Primary Grades. Topics:
