COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
and 302 must be taken in the freshman year. English
321, 322, 323 are prerequisites to all other courses in
English literature.
Students who make English their major subject for
Bachelor of Arts degree must take English 351, 352,
and 360. Twenty-one hours of advanced English must
be completed. As the first minor for an English major,
twenty-seven hours in a foreign language, History, Sociology,
Public Speaking, or Bible. As a second minor,
twenty-one hours in another of the above subjects, or
Education. It is strongly recommended that a foreign
language be either the first or second minor.
13.-Advanced Grammar. This course is given especially
for those who are deficient in English when they
enter college. It is a non-credit course, but must be
taken by those who fail in English grammar in the admission
examination. Fall term.
301.-Rhetoric and English Composition. This course
is a study of the principles of good writing. Sentence
and paragraph structure, punctuation, diction, spelling,
and all the principles of grammar are carefully studied.
Weekly compositions are required. Prose models are
analyzed. Prescribed for freshmen. Fall term.
302.-Rhetoric and English Composition. This is a
continuation of English 301. Exposition and argumentation
are studied. Models of each form are analyzed.
Weekly compositions are required. Prescribed for freshmen.
Winter term.
303.-Rhetoric and English Composition. This is a
continuation of English 302. Description and narration
are studied. A special study is made of the short story.
An original short story is required. Prescribed for freshmen.
Spring term.
321.-English Literature. A survey of English literature
from the beginning to eighteenth century. Masterpieces
of prose and poetry are studied in class. Themes
and written reports on outside readings are required.
Fall term.
322.-English Literature. A continuation of English
321. A survey of English literature from eighteenth71
