ABILENE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
time demands of a regular three-hour course. Fall, Winter,
Spring terms.
Beginners' Latin is formed of three continued courses. All
the following courses are not continued but independent units.
They may not all be given each year but at least will be alternated
so as to afford a broad range of study for advanced students.
321, 322, 323.-Second Year Latin. Selections from Ovid,
Pliny, Terence, Caesar, Cicero. Review of Latin grammar.
Roman history, mythology. Schedule of class work and study
similar to that of Beginners' Latin. Fall, Winter, Spring terms.
324.-Virgil's Aeneid. Translation, metrical reading,
mythology, Roman history. Prerequisite: two years high school
Latin or equivalent. Fall term.
325.-Virgil's Aeneid. A more rapid reading course in
Virgil credited independently of 324. Winter term.
326.-Cicero's Letters. Interpretation of selected letters
with a study of the Roman manners and political conditions at
the end of the Republic. Spring term.
351.-Teaching of Latin in High School. Study of the objectives,
content, and methods in teaching secondary Latin. A
critical study of textbooks and other material for teaching Latin.
The place and purpose of Latin in the curriculum. Fall term.
352.-Teaching of Caesar. Analytic study of Caesar's Gallic
Wars. Military antiquities and state of the Roman government
at that time, how to present these to the student. Prerequisite:
Latin 351. Winter term.
353.-Teaching of Virgil. A study of the major elements
of the Aeneid, chief factors of this epic; its mythology, prosody,
and setting in Roman literature. Prerequisite: Latin 351.
Spring term.
354.-Medieval Latin.-Rapid reading of easy Latin prose
and poetry previous to the Renaissance. An excellent survey of
Medieval culture and an introduction to Latin for the student of
Romance languages. Fall term.
355.-Medieval Latin. Futher study of Medieval Latin,
but is independent in its credit. Winter term.
356.-Tacitus, Germania et Agricola. Life in central and
Western Europe during the days of the late Republic and the
early Empire. Spring term.56
