men will choose their successor or successors to make these annual
awards, and they in turn will select their successors. In this way
the Frances Buster Armstrong Scholarship awards will always be
handled by a self-perpetuating agency.
James C. Armstrong Scholarship.-In May, 1949, Mrs. George
W. Birchfield, of Fort Worth, Texas, created in Abilene Christian
College another or second scholarship to be known as the James
C. Armstrong Scholarship. This award of two hundred and fifty
dollars per annum is in memory of Mrs. Birchfield's father. The
terms and conditions of this scholarship are no different from the
first one she founded. It is to be administered in the same way
by the same parties as the Frances Buster Armstrong Scholarship
described above.
Jennie Clark Memorial Scholarship.-On September 11, 1930,
the Board of Trustees of the College in appreciation of the services
rendered by the late Mrs. Jennie Clark of Luling, Texas, to orphan
children, and in appreciation of her friendship for A.C.C., created
the Jennie Clark Memorial Scholarship. These scholarships provide
for free tuition for those boys and girls entering college from the
orphans' homes maintained by members of the church of Christ.
Nannie E. Ferguson Scholarship.-February 2, 1941, Abilene
Christian College received eight hundred and twenty-six dollars
and thirty-two cents through the will of Nannie E. Ferguson of
Franklin, Tennessee. The will specified that the income from this
fund is "to be used by the College to help educate worthy boys
and girls who are desirous of an education." The income from this
fund will amount to fifty dollars for each nine months. The student
each year who benefits from this scholarship will be selected by
the Administration of the College in accordance with the will of
the donor.
J. L. Greene Memorial Scholarship.-In August, 1946, Mrs. J. L.
Greene of Midland, Texas, created a scholarship in Abilene Christian
College to be known as the J. L. Greene Memorial Scholarship.
This award of one hundred and seventy dollars per annum is in
memory of Mrs. Greene's husband. It was set up for the benefit
of worthy students, with preference being given to students preparing
themselves for preaching or directing gospel singing. Mrs.
Greene has the privilege of designating during her lifetime each
year in writing the student who is to benefit from this scholarship.
Jesse H. Jones and Mary Gibbs Jones Scholarships.--These
scholarships in agriculture, home economics, music, and allied fields,
provided in 1951 by Mr. and Mrs. Jesse H. Jones of Houston, Texas,
through Houston Endowment, Inc., total twenty-five hundred
dollars per year for ten years. In July, 1952, Houston Endowment,
Inc., increased these scholarships by one thousand dollars, making
a total of thirty-five hundred dollars for 1952-53. The scholarships
are for worthy students who cannot, without help, attend college.
The scholarships range from one hundred to three hundred dollars26
