DIVISION OF PRIMARY AND ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
331-The Elementary School Curriculum.
A course involving the study of the materials and teaching
techniques of the curriculum of the public elementary school.
350-The Teaching of Reading in the Elementary School.
This course deals with the nature of the reading process and
the program of instruction in reading in the elementary grades.
351-Teaching Arithmetic in the Elementary Grades.
The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with
ideas and teaching practices relating to arithmetic in the
modern curriculum.
353-Teaching the Social Studies in the Elementary Grades.
In this course the students apply current principles of education
in the development of a social studies program. Much time
will be devoted to the development of units of work. Students
will be taught to select and organize social science materials
for the purpose of developing social skills, understandings, and
appreciations.
359-The Elementary School: Its Organization and Administration.
This course deals with the qualifications, preparation and duties
of teachers and administrators on the elementary level.
369-Child Growth and Development.
This course deals with the physical, social, emotional and
psychological development of the child. Students are required
to spend not less than five hours per week in the study of
the child. Required of those with a major in primary or elementary
education.
374-375-Student Teaching in the Primary Grades.
This course deals with an analysis of instructional problems
and includes observation and student teaching under the
direction of a co-operating teacher. The student is required
to spend a minimum of one-half day in observation, participation,
and teaching five days per week for one semester. Prerequisite.
Fifteen hours in education, and senior standing.
378-Advanced Methods in the Elementary Grades.
A practical course in diagnostic and remedial techniques in
reading, spelling and arithmetic. Major causes of difficulties
are considered and techniques for the discovery of remedial
cases are taught, specific needs are revealed through diagnostic
testing and remedial procedures are developed and applied.
Prerequisite: Fifteen hours in education and senior standing.94
