govern it. The student is introduced to our present knowledge of
matter and energy, and the chief characteristics of plant and animal
life that surround him.
III. Social Sciences-Through which the individual comes in contact
with the major social, economic, and political issues that are
inescapable in modern life and learns not only how to adapt himself
to the group life of which he is very definitely a part, but also
how to better that group life.
IV. The Humanities-Through which the individual is introduced
to the cultural and aesthetic heritage of our civilization that he may
enjoy the beautiful in art, music, and literature and where possible
help create the beautiful.
V. The Languages -Through which the individual learns to express
his thoughts effectively and to understand and appreciate the
thoughts and emotions of others. The interpretation and appreciation
of the literatures of various lands and epochs develops a
sympathy and tolerance for all peoples and a better insight into
the life and ideals of all mankind.
VI. Health-Through which the individual develops such habits,
knowledges, and patterns of conduct as will enable him to take
care of his physical and mental health in the many situations that
he will confront.
During the first two years that a student is enrolled in college,
he should pursue courses in each of these fields and be free during
the last two years to continue work in the fields in which he is most
interested and which may contribute to vocational preparation.
We urge, therefore, that students be guided by the following
suggested courses when they register:
