GENERAL INFORMATION E 11
General Degree Requirements*
1. MINIMUM AMOUNT OF WORK REQUIRED
The minimum amount of work beyond the bachelor's degree required
for the Master of Arts or the Master of Science Degree is 30 semester
hours including the thesis, which will count for six semester hours.
The minimum amount for the Master of Education Degree without
a thesis is 36 hours.
A minimum of 60 semester hours of work beyond the bachelor's degree
is required for two master's degrees.
A minimum of 60 semester hours of work beyond the bachelor's degree
is required for the M.R.E. Degree.
A minimum of 90 semester hours of work beyond the bachelor's degree
is required for the S.T.B. degree.
Of the hours required, at least one-half must be in 6000-courses (for
graduates only). For M.A. and M.S. degrees, at least 18 hours, 12 of which
must be 6000-courses, must be in the major field.
2. ADMISSION TO CANDIDACY FOR THE MASTER'S DEGREE
a. After 12 semester hours of graduate work have been completed in
residence, an Application for Candidacy for the Master's Degree must be
filed with the Dean of the Graduate School. This application will be prepared
in conference with the department head or graduate advisor. Responsibility
for applying at the proper time rests with the student. The student must
enroll in and satisfactorily complete at least six semester hours of graduate
work after being admitted to candidacy. Enrollment by the student in courses
beyond the 12 hours and before admission to candidacy does not imply
that he will be admitted to candidacy for the degree.
b. The application will include a final degree plan and must be approved
by the head of the major department or the graduate advisor. Final approval
of the application rests with the Graduate Council.
c. Before a student can be admitted to candidacy for the master's degree,
he must have satisfied the following requirements:
(1) He must have completed at least 12 hours of graduate work.
(2) He must have at least a 3.0 average on all graduate work he has
completed up to the date of application.
(3) His graduate work up to this point must be acceptable to his major
department, as attested by departmental approval of his application.
(4) His degree plan must be approved by the major department and
must conform to the general regulations of the Graduate School and
the requirements for his particular degree.
d. In cases where there is some doubt as to the ability of the student
to do work acceptable for the master's degree, he will be required to pass
suitable qualifying examinations.
e. Following the action of the Graduate Council, the student will receive
from the graduate office an approved copy of the application or a letter
explaining why approval has been withheld.
*A maximim of one-third of the total hours required for the degree may be done in Hardin-Simmons University and
counted as residence in Abilene Christian College provided such courses fit into the degree pattern as outlined by the
student's advisor. Such courses are subject to review and approval by the Graduate Dean and/or the Graduate Council.
The necessary forms for inter-institutional registration are available in the Graduate Office.
