approved by the head of the major department. Final approval of
the application rests with the Graduate Council.
c. Before a student can be admitted to candidacy for the master's
degree, he must have satisfied the following requirements:
(I) He must have completed at least 12 hours of graduate work.
(2) He must have at least a 3.0 average on all graduate work he
has completed up to the date of application.
(3) He must hase taken and attained a satisfactory score on the
Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record Examinations. (This
test will be taken on the campus of Abilene Christian College
during the first semester of enrollment.)
(4) His graduate work up to this point must be acceptable to his
major department, as attested by departmental approval of
his application.
(5) His degree plan must be approved by the major department
and must conform to the general regulations of the Graduate
School and the requirement for his particular degree.
d. In cases where there is some doubt as to the ability of the student
to do work acceptable for the master's degree, he will be required
to pass suitable qualifying examinations.
e. Following the action of the Graduate Council, the student will
receive from the Graduate Office an approved copy of the application
or a letter explaining why approval has been withheld.
f. After a student has been admitted to candidacy, no changes may
be made in the degree plan without the approval of the department
concerned and the Dean of the Graduate School.
4. Thesis Requirement:
a. A thesis is required for all degrees except the Master of Education
Decree. When a thesis is required, a committee of three to direct
the thesis will be appointed by the Dean of the Graduate School in
consultation with the student and with the major department head or
graduate advisor. One member of the committee must be from the
candidate's major field and one from his minor field or supporting
fields.
b. The thesis must demonstrate the student's ability to do research
and to think independently.
c. A reading copy of the thesis must be in the hands of the chairman
of the thesis committee not later than eight weeks prior to graduation
in a long session, and not later than five weeks prior to graduation
in a Summer session.
d. Four copies of the thesis (two for the library, one for the major
professor, and one for the candidate) must be submitted to the Dean
of the Gradlunte Sdhool not later than two weeks before the degree is
to be conferred in a Summer session, and not later than one week before
the degree is to be conferred in a Summer session. A binding fee
of $16.00 must be deposited with the Bursiar of the College before the
degree is conferred.24
