Norman Whitefield
Department Head
The Department of Art provides an opportunity
for a student with a major interest in art
to develop his abilities in the environment of a
Christian liberal arts institution. It is important,
therefore, that every student set his goals to include
scholarship in the core curriculum of the
college as well as understanding and skill in his
major field of art.
The art major may work toward the Bachelor
of Science in Education or the Bachelor of Arts
degree.* Students who complete the requirements
for the BSEd degree are qualified to teach
art at the secondary level. The BA degree provides
a necessary foundation for further study
at the graduate level for prospective artists, college
art teachers, and art historians, or for concentrated
training in advertising art, interior decoration,
and other commercial arts.
The development of basic studio skills is emphasized.
Such experience is balanced, however,
with introductory courses in art history and
theory in order to establish historical perspective
and develop critical judgment.
*The Department of Art is currently making plans for additional
course offerings and degree programs. Included in these plans
are the addition of the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and degree
programs with increased art historical emphasis. It is hoped
that the new programs will become effective at the beginning
of the fall semester of the 1972-73 school year.
