Education
Purpose and Philosophy
The ACU Department of Education offers graduate programs in the
following areas:
* Elementary teacher
* Secondary teacher
* School supervisor
* School counselor
* Educational diagnostician
* Reading specialist
* School administrator
* Superintendent
The purpose of these programs is to prepare master teachers for
elementary and secondary classrooms and skilled and successful
personnel for roles as administrators, supervisors, reading specialists,
diagnosticians and counselors for public and private elementary and
secondary schools.
The education department at ACU seeks to prepare individuals to
have a thorough mastery of the technical and practical aspects of
education and are skilled in both the art and science of teaching andlearning. The faculty and staff of the department seek to accomplish
this within the context of Christian values and principles.Education is one of the largest programs at ACU, with
approximately 700 graduate and undergraduate students
each year involved in some aspect of educator preparation.
With a student-faculty ratio of 17 to 1, each student receives
individual attention from top quality faculty members.
Approximately 81 percent of the education faculty hold the
doctorate and the other members are working toward that degree.
Faculty members author teaching materials, publish articles and
papers, present at state and national conferences, serve as officers in
professional organizations and conduct numerous workshops and
seminars for school professionals.
Admission Requirements
1. A completed application for admission to the ACU Graduate
School and application fee.
2. An officially reported Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) score.
3. An official transcript (in English or translated into English)
indicating an earned baccalaureate degree from a four-year
accredited institution.
4. Three (3) letters of recommendation.
5. For students whose first language is not English, an officially
reported Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
score of at least 550.
6. A resume indicating work experience in education.
Departmental Requirements
A student must earn 36 hours of graduate credit, at least half of
which must be in 600-level courses. A minimum of 12 semester
hours is required in education courses relating to the student's
principal field of study. In all graduate programs in the education
department, with the exception of the school administrator aid
superintendent programs, three years of teaching experience,
in addition to the master's degree, are required to receive a
professional certificate.
In the school administrator and superintendent programs, two years
of teaching experience are required. Meeting the requirements of a
master's degree in education does not necessarily qualify the student
for professional certification. Each student's professional certification
program must be planned to meet individual needs and to ensure
competence in the chosen area of professional endeavor.
In all cases, the student must pass the state required Examination
for the Certification of Educators in Texas (ExCET) prior to
certification. If the student's undergraduate preparation is
inadequate, the professional certificate requirements may exceed
the minimum requirements of the degree.
Elementary School Teacher
A 36-HOUR NON-THESIS PROGRAM
* Specialization area (12 hours): art, biology, chemistry,communication-speech, English, French, German, history,
mathematics, music, physical education, physics, psychology,
Spanish or other approved courses.
