GEOLOGY 83
Geology
The Department of Geology in the College of Natural
and Applied Sciences offers the Bachelor of Science
Degree in Geology and the Bachelor of Science Degree
in Engineering Geology. Current faculty members are
listed at the end of this section.
INTRODUCTION
Geology is concerned with the processes operating in and
on the earth, and consequently geological research overlaps
with such fields as chemistry, physics, and biology.
The geology student can choose from many specialties,
each requiring familiarity with all facets of earth study.
Economic applications are increasing as more nonrenewable
natural resources are located and exploited.
Career opportunities include industry, federal employment,
and research. The program is also a good
preparation for graduate work.
Most geology courses involve labs, and many require
weekend field trips in rugged terrain. Every geology
major must enroll in GEOL 475, Field Geology, which
involves five weeks spent in field situations. The best
time to take this course is the summer semester before
graduation. Students who expect to be heavily involved
in extra-curricular activities may be unable to satisfy
course requirements. GEOL 225, Introduction to Field
Work, offered each spring, involves two weeks of concentrated
field work in a selected geologic province of
North America outside of the southwest.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE
IN GEOLOGY
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to this program, a student must
satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial Academic
Programs," p. 16.
General Education Requirements
General Education requirements for the BS are listed on
page 19. Geology majors must also take eight hours of a
foreign language unless the department chairman approves
the substitution of science courses related to the student's
career goals.
Every geology major is also urged to take English 567,
Business and Professional Writing. This course may not,
however, be substituted for an English requirement.
Departmental Requirements
Departmental requirements for the BS in Geology are as
follows:
1. Required geology courses, 42 hrs.: GEOL 121, 122,
223, 296, 350, 370, 360, 475, 450, and 9 hours of
additional upper-division work.
2. Other math and science requirements, 27 hrs.:
MATH 124; PHYS 110 and 112; BIOL 111 and 4
additional hours of biology approved by the advisor;
CHEM 131, 132, 133, and 134.General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, the student majoring
in Geology must take five hours of advanced
electives.
Suggested Schedule
During the summer before the senior year, the Geology
major should take GEOL 475, a six-hour summer field camp.
