Department of Communication
Chairman of Department: Edward M. Brown
The courses of the Communication Department are grouped into four divisions; human
communication, drama, communication disorders, and journalism and mass communication.
Courses may be selected from these divisions for a major leading to the Master
of Arts Degree.
Attention is called also to a Master of Arts degree program in Religious Communication,
which is described elsewhere in this catalog. Please refer to the index for
page numbers.
Departmental Requirements for the Degree
Prerequisites:
A Bachelor of Arts Degree or the equivalent. Certain leveling courses are required
prior to admission if the student does not have a communication major in his
undergraduate work.
The department requires a GRE score of 1000 for unqualified admission. Since the
graduate school grants admission with a GRE of 800, the department will grant
conditional admission with GRE scores between 800 and 1000. Conditional admission
can be removed by scoring 75 on the Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling test or by
satisfactory performance on specified courses, or both.
Departmental Procedures and Student Options:
1. At the beginning of the master's program, the candidate will be assigned a
graduate advisor by the department chairman.
2. After he has completed between nine and twelve semester hours in approved
graduate courses, the student will take an evaluative examination. This examination
will serve as a basis for planning the balance of the candidate's program.
3. The students will be given three options:
a. A 30-semester-hour program, which includes a six-hour formal thesis.
b. A 30-semester-hour program, which includes a formal project(s) equivalent
in time and effort to the traditional thesis. This may consist of two three-hour
projects or one six-hour project, reported in a manner satisfactory to his
graduate committee.
c. A 36-semester-hour program, which requires 36 semester hours of course
work. These courses will be specified by the graduate committee under
whom the student is working. One-half of the program must be done in
600-level courses.
4. After the completion of all credit requirements, the student will take a final oral
examination over thesis and course work.
Major:
For a major, a minimum of 24 semester hours must be completed in one division of
the Department of Communication.59
