Admission Requirements 9
Admission
Requirements
A goal of the director of admissions is to admit a broad
range of well-prepared students. The availability of student
financial aid facilitates this goal by permitting the university
to consider applicants without regard to their ability to pay
full tuition costs. See the Financial Aid section of this
catalog. The university is committed to providing equal
educational opportunities for students without regard to
race, color, sex, creed, handicap, or national origin. As a
private educational institution, however, ACU reserves the
right to deny admission to any applicant whose academic
preparation, character, or personal conduct is determined
to be inconsistent with the purposes and objectives of the
university.

ADMISSION CRITERIA
Freshman Admission
The purpose of the admission process is to identify
applicants who are likely to succeed academically at ACU
and at the same time contribute positively to the campus
community. The process considers such factors as high
school records (including courses taken, grade trends, and
rank in class), scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
or the American College Test (ACT), letters of reference,
extracurricular activities and honors, and personal contact.
Admission or denial of admission is not based on any
single factor.
The director of admissions can consider freshman
applications from students who have not graduated from
high school but have passed the General Educational
Development equivalency test and from persons 21 years of
age or older who present strong evidence of ability to
succeed in college.
Admission Deficiency
Admitted students who have not earned at least two high
school units of the same foreign language and at least one
high school unit each of two different lab sciences such as
biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, anatomy
and physiology or any of the approved sciences listed under
Chapter 75 Curricu)um, Subchapter , Graduation
Requirements of the Texas Education Association, will havean admission deficiency. A science subscore of 27 or higher
on the ACT will also satisfy the high school science
requirement. Admission deficiencies may be removed as
prescribed in the section on general education requirements.
Transfer Admission
Transfer applicants are evaluated under the same criteria as
freshman applicants, except that college transcripts are also
considered. Transfer applicants must submit an official
transcript from each college previously attended and a high
school transcript. Admitted students who have 65 or more
semester hours of transferable college credit are not required
to take the SAT or ACT if they have met all General
Education Requirements at ACU. They must be in good
standing with the college or university previously attended
and be acceptable for readmission there. Those on
suspension are not eligible to enroll at ACU.
Transfer students who are offered admission to ACU may
request a preliminary summary of their transfer credit.
Transfer courses with a grade of C or higher from accredited
institutions will be posted to the student's ACU record and
may count toward graduation if the credits are appropriate.
No more than 66 semester hours of credit from a
community or junior college may be transferred to ACU
without special approval of the provost. Transfers from
nonaccredited institutions must complete 30 semester
hours at ACU with at least a 2.00 (C) average to validate
prior college work (ACU accepts only work equivalent or
comparable to work offered at ACU), before the transfer
credit will be posted to the student's ACU transcript.
Note: Transfer Articulation Agreements in place with
some institutions will govern transfer for their students;
the Registrar's Office maintains a list of approved
agreements. See Transfer and Post-Admission Transfer
Credit, p. 17, for explanations about the crediting and
posting of transfer work.
International Admission
International students applying for admission to Abilene
Christian University are given the same consideration as
other students except that those whose native language is
not English must also submit scores on the Test of English
as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and show evidence of
ability to understand and use English sufficiently well to
succeed in their work at ACU. Citizens of a foreign
country should correspond with the International Division
concerning the issuing of the 1-20 form, Certificate of
Eligibility, before applying for a student visa. International
transfer students must supply an official transcript in
English of all transfer work. See the Admission Process.
Military and Veterans Admission
Military service personnel and veterans may receive credit
for successful completion of college-level military service
schools as set forth in the American Council on Education's
"Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the
Armed Services."
