18 Academic Information
Withdrawing from Courses
Most students successfully complete the courses for which
they register. If it becomes necessary to withdraw from a
course, the student should visit first with his or her
academic adviser. The adviser will provide instruction on
completing a Withdrawal from Class form and distributing
it to the appropriate offices.
The last day to withdraw from a course is Friday of the 12th
week of a long term and the corresponding day of a short
term. There is no withdrawal after a weekend course begins.
Students should be aware that withdrawing from a course
or courses may affect some financial aid packages negatively.
Students may not withdraw from freshman Bible, freshman
English, PE, UNIV 100, or ACAD courses unless withdrawing
from the University or unless the appropriate
college dean approves the withdrawal for exceptional
circumstances.
For the refund schedule for withdrawing from a class or
from the university, please see Financial Information toward
the back of this catalog.
Withdrawing from the University
Students who must withdraw from all courses (or from
their last course) or from the university are required to
complete a Withdrawal from College form in the Campus
Life Office, 1st floor, McKinzie West.
Academic Standing
Students may continue their education at ACU as long as
they are making satisfactory academic progress and are
complying with all university regulations. An assessment of
academic progress is made at the end of each semester.
Students are generally considered to be in good standing if
their cumulative GPA is at least 2.00 or if their dean and
department chair feel that they can achieve the required
cumulative GPA by the time of graduation. (This is a
minimum of 2.00, but some departments and colleges
require a higher GPA for their students. These requirements
are specified in the departmental sections of this catalog.)
Students who seem to be in danger of dropping below
required standards are given written warning on their
official grade reports. Students are placed on probation
following any semester in which their semester GPA is
below 1.5 or after which their cumulative GPA is below 2.0
If students on academic probation fail to make satisfactory
progress during the next regular semester at ACU, they are
suspended from school. Students are suspended after any
semester in which their cumulative GPA falls below 1.00 or
after one semester on probation after which their cumulative
does not equal or exceed 2.00. Students who have been
suspended for academic reasons may apply for readmission
after being out of school for at least one long term, or they
may obtain permission to enroll on probation in a long
term or summer school at ACU by special arrangement.
Suspended students are not permitted to take classes at
another institution for credit toward a degree at ACU.In all cases of suspension, the student's academic dean
consulting with the departmental chair will decide whether
the student should be readmitted, and if so, whether special
conditions should be required for readmission. When
students are readmitted after suspension, they are placed on
probation for one semester and are not eligible for financial
aid. If they do not make satisfactory progress that semester,
they are required to withdraw from school.
Students on academic probation are not permitted to be
candidates for or to hold any elected or appointed office.
Decisions concerning academic standing may be appealed
to the Admissions Committee.
Applying for Graduation
To graduate, students should apply for graduation by the
middle of the long term prior to the anticipated graduation
term. The deadlines for applications are Friday of the ninth
week of the fall semester for spring graduation and Friday
of the ninth week of the spring semester for summer or fall
graduation. Applications for graduation can be secured in
the Registrar's Office. The student should complete the
form and take it to his or her major adviser for the initial
degree plan review. The application and a copy of the
student's updated degree plan are then forwarded to the
Registrar's Office for processing.
Ordering a Transcript
Current and former students may order up to 5 transcripts
per order, whenever needed, at no cost. Additional
transcripts may be ordered at the same time for $2 each.
All transcript orders must be in writing and bear the signature
of the person whose record appears on the transcript.
Orders may be mailed to the Registrar's Office, ACU Box
79141, Abilene, Texas 79699-9141, or faxed to the office at
915-674-2238. Transcripts will not be released to students
not in good standing with the Business or Student Financial
Services offices. Students not in good standing with the
Business Office may order transcripts for job interviews to
be sent directly to prospective employers. All students who
have had a loan, upon leaving ACU, must complete a
federally required exit interview in the Student Financial
Services Office before any transcripts can be released.
