BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to the program in chemistry or
biochemistry, a student must satisfy the requirements listed
under "Initial Academic Programs," p. 16.
General Education Requirements
General education requirements (University Core and
Degree Core requirements) for the BS are listed on pp.
21-22. The student seeking the BS in chemistry or
biochemistry will take ENGL 112 or 326 as part of
the BS Core.
Departmental Requirements: Chemistry
Departmental requirements for the BS in chemistry are as
follows:
1. Required courses, 37 hours: CHEM 131/133,
132/134, 221/223, 322/324, 323, 331/333, 332/334,
351, 352, 353, 354, 441/443.
2. Selections in chemistry, 6 hours, chosen from upper
level courses.
3. Mathematics, 14 hours: MATH 124, 183/185, 186,
and 286.
4. Physics, 8 hours: PHYS 110/111, 112/113; or 120,
122.
5. Foreign language, 6 hours: FL_ 111, 112; or
computer science, 8 hours: CS 151/161, 152/162.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, students majoring in
chemistry must take 8-10 hours of general electives,
arranged to ensure 33 semester hours of advanced work.
Electives may include deficiency requirements in science
and foreign language.
Departmental Requirements: Biochemistry
Departmental requirements for the BS in biochemistry are
as follows:
1. Required courses, 40 hours: CHEM 131/133,
132/134, 221/223, 322/324, 323, 331/333, 332/334,
351, 353, 443, 453, 454; and either 352 or 354.
2. Biology courses, 11 hours: BIOL 112/114, 113/115,
and 312 (lecture).
3. Mathematics, 10 hours: MATH 124, 183/185, and
186.
4. Physics, 8 hours: PHYS 110/111, 112/113; or PHYS
120, 122.
5. Foreign language, 6 hours: FL_ 111, 112; or
computer science, 8 hours: CS 151/161, 152/162.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, the student majoring
in biochemistry must take 4-6 additional hours of electives
including deficiency requirements in science and foreign
language.Departmental Requirements: Geology (Cooperative
Degree)
Departmental requirements for the BS in geology
are as follows:
1. Geology, 40 hours: GEOL 1401, 1411, 2410, 2411,
3311, 3312, 3405, 3410, 4410, and six hours of
advanced GEOL selections. Note: these courses are
taken cooperatively at Hardin-Simmons and carry HSU
numbers.
2. Chemistry, 8 hours: CHEM 131/133, 132/134
(partially fulfills University Core science
requirements).
3. Physics, 8 hours: PHYS 120, 122 (recommended) or
110/111, 112/113 (partially fulfills University Core
science requirements).
4. Mathematics, 7 hours: MATH 183/185, 186 (fulfills
University Core math requirements).
5. Support area, 3 hours: MATH 277 or BIOL 483.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, the student majoring
in geology must take 16 hours of general electives, arranged
to ensure 33 semester hours of advanced work. Electives
may include deficiency requirements in science and foreign
language.
BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREES
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to the program in chemistry or
biochemistry, a student must satisfy the requirements listed
under "Initial Academic Programs," p. 16.

5. Course concentration in any single department, 18
hours (including 6 hours of advanced work).
