Department of Psychology
Chairman of Department and Graduate Advisor: Edwin B. Headrick
The graduate curriculum in psychology leads to the Master of Science or Master of
Arts* degree in counseling/preclinical psychology with an applied emphasis. Consistent
with the overall purpose of Abilene Christian University, the psychology curriculum is
firmly based in the belief that the Bible is God's Word and that Christian view of man is
essential to understanding man's place in the world.
The program is designed to enable those achieving the master's degree to find
employment with supervision in various areas of psychology, to begin a college teaching
career, and/or to continue in further graduate study. In the latter case, whether this
program coincides well with any doctoral program elsehwere depends on the requirements
of the institution granting the doctorate. Also, the program is intended to prepare
those who are awarded a master's degree to be certified as a Psychological Associate by
the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists. Completion of the degree does not
guarantee certification; all requirements of the Board must be met, including passing of
an examination administered by the Board.
The Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is required for
admission into this program. Verbal and quantitative scores must total at least 900 for
unconditional admission. For other admissions requirements please refer to "General
Regulations" in the front section of this catalog.
