An investigation of the nature, scope, and purpose of painting, sculpture,
and architecture as distinct mediums of expression and as examples of
cultural and historical patterns.
1303. Drawing I* (2-4)
Introduction to studio activity. Visual fundamentals as expressed through
drawing. Contour, gesture, form, structure, light and shade.
1304. Drawing II* (2-4)
Continued exploration of fundamental problems of pictorial expression
with drawing media. Emphasis on figure drawing. Prerequisite: Art 1303.
1305. Design I* (2-4)
Fundamental experiences in visual organization on a two-dimensional
plane. Study of value, color, shape, surface and line and their interrelationships.1306. Design II* (2-4)
Fundamental experiences in visual organization on a three-dimensional
space. Study of space articulated by line, plane, mass, volume and
surface.

Development of more complex drawing problems emphasizing figure
drawing, but including total light and space environments. Prerequisite:

Exploration of the interrelationship of drawing, design, and painting.

2324. Drawing and Painting 11* (2-4)
Continuation of 2323 with continued exploration of the interrelationship
of drawing, design, and painting. Prerequisite: Art 2323.
2327. Art History I, General Survey
Ancient, classic, and medieval art of the Western World.
2328. Art History II, General Survey
Art of the Western World from Renaissance to contemporary times.
3333. Sculpture I* (2-4)
Introduction to sculptural concepts with emphasis on form, media, and
technique. Modeling, aluminum casting, and stone carving are explored.
Prerequisite: Art 1306.
3341. Advanced Painting I* (2-4)
Advanced problems in pictorial expression. Oil or acrylic paints. Prerequisite:
Completion of Art Core.
3342. Advanced Painting 11* (2-4)
Continuation of 3341. The student should expect to initiate and develop
some of the course problems according to his personal interests and
aptitudes. Prerequisite: Art 3341.
3345. Art History III, Modern Art
Art of the 19th and 20th centuries in Europe and the United States.
Prerequisites: Art 2327, 2328.
3346. Art History IV, Advanced Survey of American Art
Architecture, painting, and sculpture of the United States from Colonial
times to the present. Prerequisites: Art 2327, 2328.
3349. Drawing IV* (2-4)
Continuation of 2321 with an emphasis on personal experimentation in
several media. Prerequisite: Art 2321.3353. Graphic Design I* (2-4)
Introduction to visual communication. Basic problems in developing an
understanding of perceptual and cognitive processes. Methods of
preparing and presenting visual materials.
3354. Graphic Design 11* (2-4)
Perception of the visual message. An intermediate course emphasizing
vocabulary development through the exploration of concepts from
semiotic and information theory.
3357. Sculpture 11* (2-4)
Continuation of 3333 with an emphasis on bronze casting and wood
carving. Prerequisite: Completion of Art Core.
3361. Ceramics I* (2-4)
Introduction to ceramics. Construction of pottery forms by hand building
and on the wheel.
3362. Ceramics 11* (2-4)
Development of proficiency on the wheel. Concentration on design
principles and an introduction to glaze formulation. Prerequisite: Art
3361.
3365. Secondary Art Problems
Problems of curriculum guidance, theory, and special projects for the
teacher of art at the high school and junior high school level. Prerequisite:
Completion of Art Core. Offered spring semester, even numbered
years.
3366. Art Theory
A philosophical study of production and perception in the visual arts
through analysis of works of art and the writing of philosophers, artists
and critics. Prerequisite: Completion of Art Core. Offered spring semester,
odd numbered years.

Advanced sculpture problems with an emphasis on content. The student
chooses his own media and techniques. Advanced mold-making and

An increased emphasis on student initiative and experimentation in
problems of style and techniques. Prerequisite: Art 3342 or equivalent.
4372. Advanced Painting IV* (2-4)
Continuation of 4371. The student will be expected to further develop a
personal style of pictorial expression. Prerequisite: Art 4371 or equivalent.4373. Early Christian Art
Expressions of Christian faith in all media of artfrom its beginnings to the
development of early medieval and Byzantine art.
4374. Art History V
Course content to be determined by the instructor's special interest or
area of current research, and listed in the appropriate schedule of
classes. Prerequisites: Art 2327, 2328 and consent of instructor.
4375. Graphic Design II1* (2-4)
Graphic procedures and reproduction processes. Projects and readings
dealing with typesetting, printing, ink, papers, imposition, folding and
binding, die cutting and embossing, mechanicals, graphic illustration,
photographic processes and general studio skills and techniques.
4376. Graphic Design IV* (2-4)
Perception of the visual message. A continuation of 3354. Investigation
of systems of order in ancient and modern times with attention to readability/legibility,
attention/comprehension and the use of metaphor in
visual communication.
4377. Graphic Design V
Advanced graphic design projects. Corporate identity, packaging, advertising
campaign, publication design, diagraming and illustration. Selected
readings and research in history, perception, or technology.
4378. Graphic Design VI
Graphic design studio with emphasis on portfolio development and work
in areas of deficiency. Investigation of a specific area of interest resulting
in a mini-exhibit and accompanying documentation.
4379. Sculpture IV* (2-4)
Sculptural problems using larger scale forms with medium and technique
chosen by the student. Prerequisite: Art 4368 or equivalent.
4381. Ceramics II1* (2-4)
Further development of proficiency with the wheel. Special projects in
technique and forms, and experiments with glazing and firing. Prerequisite:
Art 3362 or equivalent.
4382. Ceramics IV* (2-4)
Special pottery or ceramic projects. Prerequisite: Art 4381 or equivalent.
4383. Jewelry/Metals I* (2-4)
Designing and making jewelry and small objects with metals and
selected materials. Stone setting, casting and constructed forms. May be
repeated for 3 hours credit.4384. Jewelry/Metals II
Exploration of the plasticity of metal. Forming of holloware. Smithing
larger forms by stretching and angle raising. Jewelry work in fabrication
or casting. Emphasis on design and craftsmanship. May be repeated for 3
