INTRODUCTION
The Department of Computer Science in the College of
Arts and Sciences offers both the Bachelor of Science and
the Bachelor of Arts degrees in computer science.
The Bachelor of Science in computer science provides a
strong foundation for students planning graduate study in
computer science or computer engineering; it also serves as
preparation for students planning to pursue a technical
career in computing. The degree requirements are
patterned after the curriculum recommendations of the
Association for Computing Machinery. Elective hours
within the degree allow a student to focus on a particular
area of computer science, such as systems software or
numerical computation.
The Bachelor of Arts in computer science is intended
primarily for the student who plans to teach computer
science at the secondary level. It may also be appropriate
for a student who intends to specialize in the application of
computing technology to another discipline.
Students who wish to teach computer science in secondary
schools may pursue either a Bachelor of Science with a
major in interdisciplinary studies or a Bachelor of Arts in
computer science. The BS in interdisciplinary studies
requires a minimum of 25 semester hours in computer
science; it is described in the Department of Education
section of this catalog.
Laboratory and class assignments use a variety of
computing resources, including Unix workstations from
DEC, Sun, and NeXT, a VMS timesharing system, and
numerous personal computers. All computing resources
are connected to the campus network, which in turn
provides access to the global Internet via the Texas Higher
Education Network (THEnet).
An active student chapter of the ACM sponsors guest
speakers and also organizes social activities. In addition,
ACU students have distinguished themselves in the ACM's
annual regional and international programming
competitions.
Special Departmental Requirements
In order to enroll in any upper division computer science
course, a student must maintain a grade point average of at
least 2.5 in all computer science courses attempted.
CS 495, Computer Science Senior Seminar, must be taken
the last spring semester before graduation. A student
who delays graduation into the following spring will be
required to repeat the course. Students seeking teaching
certification should plan to do their student teaching
in the fall so that they can take CS 495 in the spring of
their final year.Note that many required courses are not offered every year.
Failure to complete these courses when offered may delay
graduation. Students should consult the departmental
office for up-to-date information on when courses
will be offered.
