It is the purpose of the graduate program in education to prepare master teachers for
elementary and secondary school classrooms, and to provide competent personnel for roles
as school administrators, school supervisors, educational diagnosticians, reading specialists,
and school counselors. To this end, graduate programs in education are offered in the following
areas of educational activity:
The Elementary Teacher The Educational Diagnostician
The Secondary Teacher The Reading Specialist
The School Supervisor The School Administrator and
The School Counselor Superintendent
The student may work toward the Master of Science degree in education or the Master
of Education degree. Most of the programs lend themselves more readily to the Master of
Education pattern.
The programs are planned to prepare students, as far as possible, for Texas public
school certification. The student should understand, however, that professional certification
assumes an undergraduate preparation leading to the provisional certificate. If a student
wishes to work toward a Master's degree in education and a certificate, he should make
certain that a graduate program is planned to serve his dual purpose. The graduate student
should meet with his/her advisor early in the program in order to develop a degree plan.
In all graduate programs in the Education Department, with the exception of the School
Administrator and Superintendent programs, three years of teaching experience, in addition
to the master's degree, are required to receive a professional certificate. In the School
Administrator and Superintendent programs, only two years of teaching experience are
required.
For admission into the master's degree programs in this department, a student is
required to submit satisfactory scores on either the Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record
Examinations (GRE) or on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Three letters of recommendation
(preferably from school personnel) are required. For other admissions requirements,
please refer to "General Regulations" in the front section of this catalog.
