Brent Green, Department Head
The Art Department provides an opportunity for a student with a strong interest
in art to develop his abilities in the environment of a Christian, liberal arts
institution. In such an enterprise, every student should set his goals to include
scholarship and spiritual growth as well as understanding and skill in his major
field.
Programs are offered leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts
and Bachelor of Science in Education degrees. The objectives of these programs
are to develop the student's art making abilities and his understanding of the art
of the past and present. To accomplish these objectives, the department
provides a program of undergraduate study incorporating studio experiences
and art history. Art fundamentals stressed through design and drawing are the
bases for deeper involvement in artistic problem solving in advanced courses.
Art historical studies include broad surveys and studies of specific periods and
movements with a view to developing an understanding of the major accomplishments
in world of art from prehistoric to contemporary time.
The student is encouraged from the beginning of his studies to do independent
work, supplementing the hours spent under instruction. Senior students
are provided with semi-private studio space as an encouragement to independent
work and as a special aid in the preparation of the solo exhibition.
All art facilities are located in the Alice Pratt Brown Art Hall in the Don
Morris Center. The building features three stories of well equipped and airconditioned
studio and classroom space. The Clover Virginia Shore Art Gallery,
a part of the complex, provides opportunity for the study of original works of
art.
your future in Art
There has been no period in American history when there has been greater
activity in the various art professions than the present. At the secondary school
and college level, artist-teachers of exceptional ability continue to be in demand.
Well prepared lecturers and research specialists in art history and art
education find opportunities on the faculties of colleges and universities. The
commercial arts and mass communication fields are growing with the general
economy, requiring a continuing influx of individuals with visual arts skills.
Art trained personnel are sought by art galleries and museums. Increasing
interest on the part of the general public in original design and well crafted objects
has resulted in more artists earning their livelihood through sales of their
work than at any time in the past.
Art is today at its highest point in prestige and value in our culture. Many art
careers are hybrid in that they result from the changing demands of diverseDepartment of Art 55
