30COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
The numbers following course titles indicate (1) hours of
lecture per week, (2) hours of laboratory per week, and (3)
semester credit hours. An asterisk following these three
figures indicates that the course carries variable or alternativecredit and that the figures represent the maximum variation.
In general, credit hours for these courses may range from
one to the number indicated. Note that some courses are
offered less than once a year. Failure to complete these
courses when they are offered may delay graduation.
Arabic
FLAR 111 Elementary Arabic I (3-1-4), fall. Introduction to Arabic
language and culture. Emphasis is on oral communication skills. Lab fee:
$25. No prerequisites or previous experience in the language is needed.
FLAR 112 Elementary Arabic I (3-1-4), spring. A continuation of
FLAR 111. Lab fee: $25. Prerequisite: FLAR 111 or equivalent.
FLAR 221 Intermediate Arabic I (3-0-3), fall. Further study of basic
grammar with greater emphasis on conversation and reading. Prerequisite:
FLAR 111, 112 or eqiuvalent.
FLAR 222 Intermediate Arabic H (3-0-3), spring. A continuation of
FLAR 221. Prerequisite: FLAR 221 or equivalent.
Chinese
FLCH 111 Elementary Chinese I (3-1-4), fall, when available.
Introduction to Mandarin Chinese. Emphasis on oral communication
skills. Lab fee: $25. No prerequisites.
FLCH 112 Elementary Chinese I (3-1-4), spring, when available.
Continuation of FLCH 111. Lab fee: $25. Prerequisite: FLCH 111 or
equivalent.
French
FLFR 111 Elementary French I (3-1-4), fall. An introduction to the
basic skills of speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. Lab fee: $25.
No prerequisite.
FLFR 112 Elementary French I (3-1-4), spring. A continuation of
FLFR 111. Lab fee: $25. Prerequisite: FLFR 111 or equivalent.
FLFR 221 Intermediate French I (3-0-3), fall. Further study of basic
grammar with greater emphasis on conversation and reading. Prerequisite:
FLFR 111, 112, or equivalent.
FLFR 222 Intermediate French I (3-0-3), spring. Grammar review,
reading, conversation, and composition. Prerequisite: FLFR 221 or
equivalent.
FLFR 351 Introduction to French Civilization (3-0-3), fall,
even-numbered years. An overview of French history, art, and music.
Prerequisite: FLFR 222 or equivalent.
FLFR 352 Introduction to French Culture (3-0-3), spring,
odd-numbered years. A survey of life in contemporary France with
emphasis on values, attitudes, institutions, and current problems.
Prerequisite: FLFR 222 or equivalent.
FLFR 385 French Grammar and Phonetics (3-0-3), fall,
odd-numbered years. A thorough review of grammar and an introduction
to French phonetics and phonemics. Prerequisite: FLFR 222 or equivalent.
FLFR 386 French Composition and Conversation (3-0-3), spring,
even-numbered years. Prose composition with attention to the acquisition
of useful, everyday vocabulary. Prerequisite: FLFR 222 or equivalent.
FLFR 400 Guided Study (3-0-3),* on demand. Prerequisite: consent
of the instructor.
FLFR 481 Medieval and Renaissance French Literature (3-0-3),
fall, odd-numbered years. A survey of medieval and Renaissance French
literature in modern French translation. Prerequisite: FLFR 222 or
equivalent.
FLFR 482 Classical French Literature (3-0-3), spring,
even-numbered years. A general survey of seventeenth and eighteenth
century French literature. Prerequisite: FLFR 222 or equivalent.
FLFR 483 Nineteenth Century French Literature (3-0-3), fall,
even-numbered years. A general survey of nineteenth century Frenchliterature. Prerequisite: FLFR 222 or equivalent.
