76 Health, Physical Education, and Recreation
THERAPEUTIC RECREATION
The purpose of this track is to prepare the student, through
class and field experiences, to meet the graduate entrance
requirements of universities accreditated by the National
Recreation Association.
Departmental Requirements
Departmental requirements for the BS in Therapeutic
Recreation are as follows:
1. Required courses, 28 hrs.: PE 121, 122, 241, 244, 245,
330 and 490. RECR 364, 371, 420, 462, 460.
2. Interdisciplinary requirements, 27 hrs.: BIOL 291, 292;
SOCI 111, 415; PSYC 370, 391; CS 105 or ISQS
120; ART 361; and ANSC 360.
3. Recommended electives: PE 229, 352, 232, 333;
MGMT 330, and PSYC 278.
General Electives
The student majoring in Therapeutic Recreation must take
enough general electives to obtain a total of 128 credit
hours. Arrange your electives to ensure 33 semester hours
of advanced work.

32CORPORATE/ADULT FITNESS
This track is interdisciplinary by design with required
courses, electives, and laboratory experiences to prepare the
students for graduate studies in adult fitness, sports
medicine, or cardiac rehabilitation.
Departmental Requirements
Departmental requirements for the BS in Corporate/Adult
Fitness are as follows:
1. Required courses, 32 hrs.: PE 121, 122, 232, 241, 244,
245, 321, 322, 421, 472, 471; HED 324; RECR
361, 371, 420 and 462.
2. Interdisciplinary requirements, 33 hrs.: BIOL 291, 292;
CHEM 111, 112, 113, 114, 243; CS 105; PSYC 278,
MGMT 330, and HEFS 221.
3. Recommended electives: ACCT 200, MATH 130, and
MKTG 340.
General Electives

33COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
The numbers following course titles indicate (1) hours of
lecture per week, (2) hours of laboratory per week, and (3)
semester credit hours. An asterisk (*) following these three
figures indicates that the course carries variable or alternative
credit and that the figures represent the maximum variation.
In general, credit hours for these courses may range from
one to the number indicated. Note that some courses are
offered less than once a year. Failure to complete these
courses when they are offered may delay graduation.
Health Courses
HED 111 Careers and Consumer Health (3-0-3), spring of
even-numbered years. Vocational opportunities in health professions and
occupations. Health information, medical services, advertising in consumer
and preventive practices.
HED 112 Personal Health and Human Disease (3-0-3), fall of
even-numbered years. Emphasizes personal health knowledge and practices
needed for effective living. Study of human diseases with special
consideration for preventive measures.
HED 223 Community Health (3-0-3), on demand. Health resources,
services, agencies, and programs are discussed as to their effect on people
and environment. Interactions between these factors and individuals are
investigated. Legislation and public schools' influence on community
health are studied. Trips into the community are taken.
HED 252 Mental Health (3-0-3), fall, spring. Same as PSYC 252.
HED 322 School Health Programs (3-0-3), spring of odd-numbered
years. Health needs and interests of students (K-12) as a basis for selecting,
planning, and demonstrating appropriate learning experiences.
HED 324 Drug Education (3-0-3), fall. Beneficial and harmful uses
and effects of drugs. Motivations behind drug abuse and implications of
this problem on the individual, school, and society.
HED 350 Current Problems I (3-0-3), on demand. Detailed study
and research of current health problems.
HED 351 Current Problems I (3-0-3), on demand. Continued
study of current health problems.
HED 400 Guided Study (1-0-3)*, on demand.
HED 405 Human Sexuality (3-0-3), spring. An investigation of the
social, psychological, physiological, and spiritual aspects of human
sexuality. Communication skills for sex educators will be developed.
HED 409 Introduction to Theory and Practice of Counseling
(3-0-3), spring, summer even-numbered years. Same as BIBM 409.
HED 410 Death Education (3-0-3), fall of odd-numbered years.
Emphasizes a positive attitude about death. Definitions, stages, legal
aspects, funerals, basic concepts in relation to the realities of death, and
dying are studied. Counseling concepts discussed.
HED 460 Field Experience I (3-0-3), on demand. Experience to be
gained through on-site working with various community, public, or private
health agencies.
