The numbers following course titles indicate (1) hours of
lecture per week, (2) hours of laboratory per week, and
(3) semester credit hours. An asterisk following these
three figures indicates that the course carries variable or
alternative credit and that the figures represent the maximum
variation. In general, credit hours for these courses
may range from one to the number indicated. Note that
some courses are offered less than once a year. Failure to
complete these courses when they are offered may delay
graduation.
Any course may be offered on demand should sufficient interest
be demonstrated and should an instructor be available.
"Demand" courses with a defined content will be
rotated as regularly as practical.
British Literature before 1700
ENGL 201 Guided Study: British Literature before 1700 (3-0-3),* on
demand. Prerequisites: ENGL 111 and 112 or the equivalent.
ENGL 221 Major British Writers (3-0-3), fall, spring, summer. From
the Beowulf poet to Samuel Johnson. Recommended for English majors and future
teachers. Prerequisites: ENGL 111 and 112 or the equivalentENGL 401 Guided Study: British Literature before 1700 (3-0-3),* on
demand. Prerequisite: 6 hours of sophomore English.
ENGL 441 Topics in British Literature before 1700 (3-0-3),* on
demand. Prerequisite: 6 hours of sophomore English.
ENGL 481 Shakespeare: Comedies (3-0-3), spring. A study of seven
major Shakespearean comedies, with an introduction to dramatic theory.
Prerequisite: 6 hours of sophomore English.
ENGL 482 Shakespeare: Tragedies (3-0-3), fall, on demand. A study of
major Shakespearean tragedies, with a survey of the development of
tragedy from the classical period to Shakespeare's day. Prerequisite: 6
hours of sophomore English.
ENGL 383 Shakespeare: Survey (3-0-3), summer, on demand. An introduction
to comedies, histories, and tragedies. Particularly useful for future
teachers. Prerequisite: 6 hours of sophomore English.

Milton's major poetry and prose with emphasis on his work as a political
