16 Academic Information
School Office at least one month before the date
scheduled for a special written or oral examination.
In those programs where a thesis is required, the
student should consult with his advisor in regard to
the type of examination the department requires
over the thesis.
Academic Standing
The minimum GPA required for graduation is 3.0,
computed on all work taken for graduate credit. No
course carrying a grade below "C" will count toward
the degree. If a student has made a low grade in a
graduate course at ACU and repeats the course at
ACU, both grades will be counted on the GPA.
A grade of "I" (incomplete) will be assigned only
when illness or some other comparable reason
prevents the student from completing a course by
the end of the semester. An "I" must be removed
during the next 16-week semester following the one
for which it was assigned or it will be automatically
converted to an "F" As long as an "I" grade
remains on a student's record, it is counted as an
"F" in computing the GPA.
A thesis or research project which is not completed
by the end of the semester of enrollment will be
reported "IP" (in progress). After a student has
received an "IP" on a six-hour thesis (or on the last
three hours of a thesis), the student will be
required to pay a continuation fee of $75 during
any term in which he works with his committee on
the thesis or project.
Any student who does not maintain a 3.0 GPA will
be placed on scholastic probation. If during his next
enrollment he fails to attain a 3.0 average, he may
not re-enroll without permission of the graduate
dean and the departmental advisor. Enrollment in
a graduate program while on scholastic probation
will not be permitted for more than one 16-week
semester. No more than six hours of "C" may be counted
toward completion of graduate programs which
require fewer than 40 semester hours; for programs
which require between 40 and 66 hours, the limit is
nine hours of "C"; and for all other programs, the
limit is 12. If a student receives a grade of "D" or
"F" in a course, he must retake the course and, at
the same time, maintain a 3.0 GPA.
The ACU Graduate School, through action of the
graduate dean, reserves the right to refuse
continued enrollment to any student who is
negligent in conforming to student regulations or
academic standards.
Degree Time Limit
After a student has enrolled for graduate credit, all
work for the master's degree must be completed
within six calendar years. This regulation applies
to work being transferred from another institution
as well as to work done at ACU.
Applicationfor Graduation
A degree candidate must make written application
for graduation in the Graduate School Office not
later than the following dates: March 1 for May
graduation, July 1 for August graduation, and
October 1 for December graduation. Any student
who does not complete graduation requirements
during the chosen semester must reapply for a
later graduation date. Degrees are posted on the
student's transcript as soon as possible after degree
completion. Diplomas are mailed to students
approximately four months after commencement.
Appeals
Petitions for exceptions to stated requirements
because of extenuating circumstances may be
submitted to the Graduate School Office for
approval by the departmental advisor, graduate
dean, and the Graduate Council.
