western showman named Walter Perry Scott made railroad history
by imining a special train from Los Angeles to Chicago in a record
breaking 14 hours and 51 minutes

which was known as the Coyote
Special for 5500 and special
handling by the Santa Fe enabled
him to clip U hours and two minutes
of the previous record for the 22G7
mile journey

throughout the nation
Between Cameron and Surrey in
Illinois the special covered the 28
miles in 95 seconds for a world record
of 10G miles per hour In the
same territory the trnin covered
105 miles between Fort Madison and
Chillicothc in 101 minutes
On the strength of the run Death
Valley Scotty became as well known
as Buffalo Bill in whose show he
had worked before turning to prospecting
in California and Nevada
around the turn of tlw century
With the backing of a wealthy
Chicago insurance man Albert Mus
sey Johnson he later built Scottys
castle a huge 3000000 stone mansion
now managed by a religious
organization as a hotel for Death
Valley sightseers Scotty died in
January 5 1951 in the castle He
was 81 years old
